UofL sports weekend outlook

The Big East tournament for most fall sports is less than a month away. With that said, this weekend is set to host a variety of Louisville sporting events as teams look to improve upon their records and conference standings. Louisville football (5-0) is set to open Big East play this Saturday as they travel to Pittsburgh to take on the Panthers. Louisville looks to avenge a 21-14 lost last year to Pittsburgh and improve upon their 1-6 record in Big East openers since joining the league. The game is scheduled to kickoff at 11 a.m. and will be televised on ESPNU.  Read the official press release here 

Coming off a season in which they advanced to the Final Four, Louisville basketball begins this season Saturday with the annual Red-White scrimmage. The scrimmage will be held at the KFC Yum! Center and tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m. The Cardinals will host two additional scrimmages on Oct. 21st at 4 p.m. and Oct. 27th at 2 p.m. Read the official press release here

With only three games left in the regular season, the women’s soccer team (8-3-3) prepares for two Big East road games this weekend. The Cardinals will start the weekend with a Friday night match at Rutgers. Rutgers holds the advantage in the series 4-2-1 however the Cardinals earned a 2-1 win over the Scarlet Knights last season. The Cardinals will conclude the weekend on Sunday as they take on Seton Hall. The Cardinals hold a 7-0-0 advantage in the series against the Pirates, earning a 3-0 win last season. Coming off a 2-2 tie against 11th-ranked Indiana, No.22 men’s soccer (7-4-1) host 10th-ranked St. John’s Saturday night. The Cardinals looks to defeat the Red Storm and stay a top the Big East standings after losing to St. John’s 1-0 last season. The match will be held at Cardinal Park at 7 p.m. and will be televised on Fox Soccer Channel.

After knocking off No.11 Iowa last weekend, the field hockey team (8-6) prepares for two road games this weekend. The Cardinals start the weekend with a Friday game at Rutgers. The Cardinals defeated Rutgers 4-2 last season. The Cardinals will conclude the weekend on Sunday as they take on No.22 Wake Forest. Wake Forest leads the overall series 9-1 and won last year’s meeting 3-2 (OT). Read the official press release here

No.15 volleyball (16-3) starts a five-game road trip this weekend. The Cardinals will begin the weekend with a Friday night match at St. John’s. The Cardinals swept the Red Storm last season. The Cardinals will close out the weekend Sunday at Connecticut. The Cardinals also swept the Huskies last season.

Cross country is set to host the Pre- National Cross Country meet this Saturday at E.P. ‘Tom’ Sawyer State Park. The event will host 15  national ranked teams from across the country. The first race is set to start at 9:30 a.m. Read the official press release here

Louisville baseball is set to continue the annual Pizza Bowl series this weekend at Jim Patterson Stadium. The series, which marks the conclusion of fall workouts, will continue this Friday at 3 p.m. and conclude Saturday at 1 p.m. Friday game will match up Chad Green against Jeff Thompson and Saturday will see Dace Kime versus Joe Ceja.

Men’s golf will compete in the Kenny Perry Sunday- Tuesday. The event, which is the last of 2012 season, is held in Bowling Green and will last all day. After the event, the Cardinals will return to the greens in March 2013.

Women’s golf prepares to compete in the Tar Heel Invitational in Chapel Hill this weekend. The event will begin Friday and conclude on Sunday.

Both the men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams start the 2012-2013 season this Friday. The Cardinals will host Xavier at Ralph Wright Natatorium. The meet is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.

The men’s tennis team is set to compete in the Tennessee Invitational. The Invitational, held in Knoxville, will begin Friday and conclude Sunday.

Women’s tennis will compete in the ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championships beginning on Monday and ending next Thursday. The event will be held in West Lafayette, Ind. and last all day.

The rowing team will compete in the Head of the Rock event on Sunday. The event, held in Rockford, Ill., last all day.
