The success in UofL athletics just continues to happen. Here are some things to get you caught up!
*Rick Pitino took some friends fishing in the Bahamas. With the lucky streak he is on, this happened. That is an 80 pound marlin! So just like everyone else in Major League Baseball, Pitino decided it would be fun to dominate the Marlins.
*The 2013 football season opener has been moved to Sunday, September 1. The Cards will host Ohio at 3:30 and the game will now be shown on ESPN. As of now, this will be the 5th time that UofL is on ESPN. And with this year’s schedule, we will need to be on TV as much as possible so the voters and national audience will know that we are for real.
*10th ranked UofL Baseball (39-10) knocked off 14th ranked Indiana (36-10) last night at Jim Patterson Stadium in walk-off fashion. A 9th inning sacrifice fly by Danny Rosenbaum scored Cole Sturgeon for the 4-3 victory over the Hoosiers.
*More baseball news: the entire Big East Tournament will be shown on the ESPN family of networks. ESPN3 will cover all of the games except for the title game, which will be shown on ESPN U. The Big East Tournament is May 22-26 in Clearwater, FL.
*Shoni Schimmel, Sara Hammond, and Bria Smith will participate in the 2013 USA Basketball Women’s World University Games Team trials. They are among 31 athletes who will partake in this May 16-19 in Colorado Springs, CO. The 12-member team will be announced on May 19.
*Caitlin Welch, Brooke Mattingly, and Hannah Kvitle have been named to USA Volleyball’s 48-player roster for the US Women’s National Volleyball Senior A2 Program that will train and compete this summer in Dallas.
*The softball team placed 9 players on All-Big East Conference teams. Katie Keller, Katelyn Mann, Jordan Trimble, and Alicja Wolny made the 1st team. Whitney Arion, Caralisa Connell, Hannah Kiyohara, and Rachel LeCoq made the 2nd team. Maggie Ruckenbrod made the 3rd team.
*More softball news: the Cards (3 seed) will face Syracuse (6 seed) in the Big East Tournament today at 4 pm in Tampa, FL.
*Ron Mann, who has been the head coach for cross country and track & field for the last 9 years at UofL, will retire at the end of this season. Under his direction, the Cardinals have achieved eight BIG EAST team titles, including five-straight outdoor titles on the women’s side, more than 90 individual conference championships, and he was awarded the BIG EAST Coaching Staff of the Year award six times.
*Freshman men’s golfer Robin Sciot-Siegrist was 1 of 10 people to be selected to the NCAA Division 1 Men’s Golf Regional at The Ohio State University Golf Club from May 16-18.
*And for some random entertainment, here is a video that has nothing at all to do with sports, let alone UofL sports. But have a laugh anyway!
