Who’s Hot/Who’s Not? (May 27)

This is the first edition of a new set of posts on CSZ, “Who’s Hot/Who’s Not?” It will not only focus on UofL sports, but some national stories as well, since there is not much “not” going on at UofL! Enjoy!

Who’s Hot?

*Peyton Siva – Siva has possibly worked himself into this year’s NBA Draft (June 27). He was not on any of the early mock drafts, mainly because of his size. He had a great NBA Combine and has been working out well with teams at their individual combines. Now most mock drafts have Siva going in the 2nd round.

*UofL Baseball – Yes, the Cards lost both games in the Big East Tournament, but that is now old news. The good news is that they are hosting an NCAA Regional this weekend, and that is good enough to be on the “hot” list this week!

*Montrezl Harrell – Harrell is one of 24 players who accepted an invitation to attend the 2013 USA Basketball Men’s U-19 World Championship Team training camp that will be June 14-19. And oh yeah, in case you forgot…

*UofL Track & Field – The Cards will send 3 athletes to the NCAA Championships June 5-8 in Eugene, Oregon. Mattias Wolter qualified in the men’s 3,000m steeplechase. Sam Bombaugh will compete in the hammer throw. And Amashi Kendall earned her spot in the shot put.

*Miguel Cabrera – 3rd Baseman for the Detroit Tigers. Leads the MLB in batting average (.385) and RBI (57) and is 2nd in HR (14). He has been on an absolute tear so far this season. Not a UofL athlete, but still worth noting.

Who’s Not?

*Everett Golson – Golson started 11 games at QB last year for Notre Dame as a redshirt freshman. Now, he is suspended for the fall term due to “poor academic judgement.” Whatever that really means, it can’t be good. As the starting QB at a prestigious school like Notre Dame, you have to know the spotlight is always on you, and you can’t expect to get away with anything. Rudy would have never done a thing like this.

*Coca-Cola 600 fans – 10 fans were hurt Sunday night at Charlotte Motor Speedway when a nylon rope cable from the Fox television skycam fell over the track and grandstand. No one was seriously injured, but come on. Fox, you have to control your nylon rope cables better than that. This could have been a lot worse!

*Albert Pujols – Before last season, Pujols signed a contract for 10 years and $240 million. A career .322 hitter, this season he is hitting .244 with 8 HR and 30 RBI. He has 9 total hits in his last 10 games.

*Notre Dame checkbooks – During the 2011 football season, former Irish head coach Charlie Weis made made more money than Brian Kelly, who was actually coaching the team. Gotta love those hefty buyouts!

*CSZ’s own Steven Rummage – The photo says it all (you knew something was coming!)
