PRESS RELEASE
The fifth ranked Louisville women’s basketball will host the UCF at the KFC YUM! Center on Wednesday, Jan. 15 at 7:00 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on WHAS (Channels 11.2, Time Warner 432, Comcast 207). The game can also be heard live on the Cards Radio with Matt Andrews and Adrienne Johnson, carried locally on WKRD 790 AM.
The Cardinals enter the game with an overall record of 16-1 and a perfect 4-0 record in conference play. Schimmel scored 25 points, five in them in the final seven minutes to help Louisville hold off USF 62-54 to remain unbeaten in American Athletic Conference play. Schimmel’s three-point play finished an 11-1 run that enabled the Cardinals to take control for good after USF trimmed what had been a 17-point second-half deficit to 49-47 with 7:06 remaining, but that was as close as the Bulls would get before Sara Hammond and Schimmel took over down the stretch. Hammond began the spurt with a 3-point play and finished with 14 points.
Schimmel leads the Cardinals averaging double figures with 16.9 points per game. Hammond ranks second on the team in scoring, averaging 11.0 points. Asia Taylor leads the team in rebounding with 6.6 boards per game. Bria Smith rounds out the top scorers with 10.0 points per game and also the most steals over the course of the season with 34.
UCF enters the game with an overall record of 8-7 and a 1-3 record in conference play. The Knights lost to Memphis 88-52 on Saturday. UCF was led by senior Sara Djassi, who finished with 15 points. Junior Andrea Hines rounded out the double figure scorers with 10 points, while senior Erika Jones led the way on the glass with seven rebounds.
Briahanna Jackson leads the team in scoring with 17.8 points per game. Freshman Zykira Lewis ranks second on the team in scoring at 11.1 points per game. Djassi is third in points with 11.0 per game. Redshirt junior Brittney Montgomery leads the Knights on the glass with 8.9 rebounds per game.
Louisville leads the series 1-0 over UCF. Last season the Cardinals defeated UCF 94-73 in the first round of the Hardwood Tournament of Hope in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.
The game is part of the $2 beverage promotion. Bud, Bud Light and all soft drinks will be $2.
