55 (Season 2 Episode 18)

55

This week on 55…..

We talk basketball, both men’s and Women’s. We talk players of the week in multiple sports. Podcast CSZ??? We talk commits and de-commits. I will bring you a podcast I did last night with the fine folks at All Sports Discussion ACC. From Clothing to draft projections we have you all covered here.

Without further adieu, here are the most ridiculous, outlandish, interesting or just downright obnoxious things I have heard this week. THIS is 55…..

-Men’s Basketball has some figuring out to do. The Cards inexplicably lost to unranked NCST 74-65. The one thing that has plagued us over the past 2 years are 5 minute plus scoring droughts. It bit us again. in each of the Cards 5 losses this season the Cards have went 5 minutes or longer without a basket. Not because of smoldering defense but because of bad shot selection or just cold shooting. Virginia was the lone exception to that as they shut the Cards down in the first half. I still feel as if the Cards will make a deep run in the tourney but they have to figure out how to overcome this obstacle. The Cards travel to Syracuse then Miami this week.

-A reason for me being so optimistic is because the Cards have played great in the conference tournament. The Cards have not lost a game since the Big East final on March 12, 2011. We lost to UCONN 69-66 that day. I think come ACC tourney time we will be ok….

-Women’s basketball overcame a 9 point deficit in the second half to take their first lead 63-62 with just 4:11 remaining. They didn’t look back. The Cards finished off the 17th ranked UNC Tar Heels 75-66. Mariya lead all scorers with a career high 28 points. Myisha Hines-Allen added 13 and Hammond/Bria/Henderson each had 8 points. Sunday was the Cardinals’ Play4Kay game where the crowd has a pink out in honor of legendary coach Kate Yow. Wearing the pink in hopes to help bring awareness to women’s cancers. Attendance was 13k+ and the Yum! was rocking, unlike at the Men’s game. Do better MBB fans, you know which ones I mean.

-The Men’s Basketball team fell to 12 in both polls. The Women’s team moved up one spot to #8.

-Mariya Moore earned ACC Freshman of the Week honors today. She also was named College Sports Madness’ ACC Player of the Week and National Player of the Week.

-Kyle Funkhouser was named ACC Pitcher of the Week. He struck out 12 in 7 innings and allowed only 1 hit in a win vs Alabama State.

-Coach Pitino picked up a commitment from 4 star SG Ryan McMahon. The 6’1 guard is closing in on a ton of Florida High School records. This kid, I feel, will be the next Gorgui type diamond in the rough Pitino snags from time to time. Lots of potential, IMO. He will be joining an already impressive class including Donavon Mitchell, Deng Adel and Ray Spalding. Go follow them on Twitter:

– Today Isiah Johnson announced that he was flipping his commitment from Louisville to Miami. We wish the best of luck to him in his future endeavors. The 6’3 3 star WR probably will get a ton more playing time in Coral Gables.

-Last night I joined my buddy Matthew (@hokiesmash) and surprise co-host Will Ojanen () on the @AllSportsDACC podcast to talk ACC/UL. You can listen to that awesome convo here. #IHaveArrived #FrankWhoIsACop

-BirdGang Clothing announced this week that they will now be sold inside Cardinal Athletic! Congrats to my College teammate Danny Mosby

-Trezl goes 13th and Terry 16th in mock draft projections from NBA Draft.net

-Operation:Podcast CSZ was a success last week. I have very positive feelings that this will soon be a reality. We have tinkered with the idea for a while now and it seems like every day someone asks one of us for an alternative to the local scene. We hope to provide that and be your choice for local Sports Talk. That’s about all I know right now. Stay Tuned….

-With today being a snow day, I have felt very pessimistic about doing 55 today with this beautiful snow. Thankfully Justin took care of my TWICA (This Week In Cardinal Athletics) portion of 55 and brought you his Monday morning round-up. Read here.

-As always, don’t forget to follow the great people of CSZ on Twitter. @justinrenck, @Stiz_CSZ, @Darylfoust4 & myself @Jeremy_CSZ. Until next time CardNation…This was 55….
