55 (Season 2 Episode 22)

55

This week on 55…..

We close in on the season finale of 55. We talk about the Cards trips to Seattle and Tampa. Sweet 16 and National Champions? Yeah we got those too. We talk about everything in the world of Cardinal Athletics and I do mean EVERYTHING. We talk the latest episodes of the Cardinal Sports Zone podcasts which you can find at CardinalSportsZone.com/podcast (Cheap Pop). We ask again, what’s next in the ever-changing world of 55? We let you continue to teas you later after many weeks of clues. WAYNE 1K! just as I told you….

Without further adieu, here are the most ridiculous, outlandish, interesting or just downright obnoxious things I have heard this week. THIS is 55…..

We have kind of grown accustomed to winning here and I don’t want it to stop. Our Baseball team has still not lost an ACC series. Men’s hoops is heading back to the sweet 16. We just had a young lady set the American record in the 100 butterfly TWICE in the same day and win the first 2 National titles in school history in her sport. Our softball team has not lost an ACC series despite having a down year by their normal record and standards. The Women’s Basketball team is rolling also in the NCAA tourney. It is a great time to be a Louisville Cardinal…..It always is.

-The Cards NCAA Tourney trip started out a little lackluster but the Cards pull out the win behind an 18 point night from Wayne Blackshear and a Defensive Back performance of a lifetime from Mango Mathiang to defeat the anteaters of UC Irvine 57-55. Terry Rozier sealed the deal as an attempt to foul a guy turned into a steal and possession for the Cards.

The second game in Seattle was a lot more entertaining if you’re a Card fan, and let’s face it…why wouldn’t you be? The Cards dispatche #9 Northern Iowa 66-53 behind the lights out shooting of Terry Rozier who hit 8 out of his first 10 shots and finished 8-13 with 25 points and 7 assists. Terry also was 8-9 from the stripe. Trezz added 14 points and 6 rebounds. Q and Wayne both added 10 points for the Cards. Did I say Wayne? Wayne MOTHERLOVIN Blackshear scored his 1000th point for UL midway through the first half making him the 67th player in UL history to accomplish this feat and the first person in Louisville history to go to 4 straight sweet 16’s. Couldn’t have happened for a better person.

Purple Wayne…Purple Wayne….Wayne gets ALL OF THE PICS TODAY (Yes I know that’s not Wayne but they are both stars in my mind.

Moving forward

-The Cards will face and rematch conference foe NCST in the Sweet 16 at 7:37 on Friday. The Cards lost to NCST earlier this season in a game which was perceived at the time as the Cardinals only bad loss. I will go on record as saying the Cards have 0 bad losses as that win vs us surely propelled them into this sweet 16 run. That’s my story and I am sticking to it. The Cards are a three point favorite.

Women’s Basketball: (26-6) #8

Jeff Walz

The Cards opened up the NCAA tournament with a dismantling of BYU 86-53 in Tampa. Myisha Hines-Allen had a team high 19 points and 8 rebounds. Bria led the team in assists and steals. The Cards now await USF in Tampa as they won their first round game. UL is the only top 16 seed not hosting a first round site. Due to the Men’s tourney being in town they decided to hold it at USF’s home arena in the city that UL wants to return to in Tampa, host of the 2015 Final Four. They would have to go through UCONN to achieve that goal.

Louisville’s Kelsi Worrell picked up her second national title and led her team to a record-setting 6th place in the final night of competition at the NCAA Women’s Swimming and Diving National Championships at the Greensboro Aquatic Center in Greensboro, N.C .

The Cardinals finished sixth with 197 points behind winner California (513), Georgia (452), Stanford (363), Texas A&M (231), and Virginia (229). Texas (164) was seventh followed by USC (163), Florida (129 and Indiana (126) to round out the top ten in the 46 team field.

“It is unbelievable what we were able to accomplish this week,” said UofL head coach Arthur Albiero. “Our three-year progression is nothing short of impressive: 22nd in 2013, 15th in 2014, and now 6th. Much credit goes to our coaching staff, extended staff, but more importantly to our seniors. They led the way from day one and set the `crazy’ goals for the season. Also, many thanks to our administration who has supported me and my staff over the last 12 years. We are a beaming with Cardinal Pride!”

Worrell swept the butterfly events by winning the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:51.11. She was out .6 slower than she was this morning during prelims, but it paid dividends when she dropped more than two seconds to win the final tonight. Florida State’s Chelsea Britt started out fast and had the lead at the 100 yard mark but was chased down by the field led by Worrell, who posted the third fastest time in NCAA history. Teammate Tanja Kylliainen finished fifth with a 1:54.62 in the same race.
