Full disclosure: that title was sort of Steve’s idea…
Big-time quarterback recruit Jawon Pass has made his decision, and that is to commit to the Louisville Cardinals. In the end, he chose Louisville over Auburn and a strong, late push from Alabama. I repeat: Louisville beat out Auburn and Alabama for a football recruit from Columbus, Georgia. Weird, huh?
247 Sports rates Pass as the 3rd best dual-threat quarterback in the country and the 105th best player overall. Rivals has him as the 11th rated quarterback, and ESPN has him as the 9th rated quarterback. Needless to say, Jawon Pass is a big-time recruit.
Fans of the SEC powerhouses may spin it and say that they already have quarterbacks committed in the 2016 class, and that is fine. Louisville does too. And Pass has let it be known that both schools in Alabama still would accept his commitment if he chose to go there. He didn’t. He chose Louisville.
As you probably know, Jawon’s brother Khane is a freshman safety on the UofL football team for the 2015 season. That played a big factor in Jawon’s recruitment. Another big role was his relationship with offensive coordinator Garrick McGee. A lot of times, people focus on the head coach and how he would relate to the player, but McGee is the offensive coordinator and the quarterbacks coach. He will deal with Jawon more than anybody. That relationship was crucial to this decision.
There isn’t much more to say that you haven’t already read or heard. The bottom line is that a big-time quarterback prospect from 30 minutes outside of Alabama just chose to play his college football in Louisville, Kentucky. Now comes the hard part: hold onto him until National Signing Day in February!
