The University of Louisville women’s lacrosse team cracked the top five of two major polls on Monday for the first time in school history. The Cardinals are ranked fifth in both the Lacrosse Magazine and IWLCA/Inside Lacrosse polls. After back-to-back wins over two top 10 opponents, Louisville lacrosse swept the Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Lacrosse weekly honors as senior midfielder Kaylin Morissette has been named the ACC Offensive Player of the Week and sophomore goalie Brittany Read is the ACC Defensive Player of the Week.
The Cards finished last week with two wins over top 10 teams to climb from 11th to fifth in the polls. On Thursday, Louisville finished with a decisive 10-4 win over 10th ranked Northwestern. On Saturday the Cardinals upset No. 4 Notre Dame 10-9 in overtime to improve to 7-0 on the year, marking the best start in school history.
“This is certainly an exciting time for our program and I am incredibly proud of our players and staff,” said head coach Kellie Young. “Having said that, we are focusing on the work to be done, taking this season game-by-game. We face a tough Duke program on Saturday with a history of success. We need to bring our A game and be ready to attack.”
Statistically, the Cardinals are in the top-20 nationally in five different categories: No. 2 in save percentage, No. 3 in scoring defense, No. 15 in draw controls, No. 14 in scoring margin, and No. 1 in win percentage. Senior Kaylin Morissette ranks second in the nation in draw controls while sophomore Brittany Read leads the nation in save percentage. Three Cardinals rank in the top 20 in goals, Morissette, Cortnee Daley and Hannah Koloski rank 18th in the nation in goals.
The Cardinals will be back in action on Saturday, March 12 as they travel to No. 15 Duke.
