Last year, going into the Governor’s Cup game, UofL was coming off a low. They were destroyed on national TV by Houston. They hadn’t really been playing all that well. UofL fans thought we would just waltz into PJCS, crush UK, and move on to a good bowl; maybe even the Orange Bowl. None of that happened. We saw a 3 game losing streak to end the year.
This year, we feel the same way. The difference is we are justified in the feeling. Bobby Ball 1.0 appears to be back. UofL is rolling right now after 2 blowout wins against Virginia and Syracuse. They played their most complete game this year against Syracuse.
The defense got all kinds of turnovers. Syracuse could not move the ball against them. Jaire Alexander was playing like the best CB in the nation.
UofL’s offensive line dominated. They opened holes for the running backs leading to Malik Williams having a career day. Like Bobby’s first tenure, they are running the ball with power. The line protected Lamar, allowing him to throw for 270 yards and 2 TDs. Of course, Lamar did his thing rushing, going for 111 yards and 2 TDs.
Now, we head to Kroger Field. Don’t expect any discounts though. UK wants this win. They are looking for their first 8 win season since the Lord said, “let there be light.” However, Bobby and UofL have the ultimate coupon in Lamar Jackson. UK has struggled mightily against running QBs and there is arguably no better running QB in all of football than Lamar.
The biggest question mark is the same as it has been all season. Will UofL’s defense be the defense of the last 2 weeks or the defense that allowed huge days to Wake Forest and Boston College offenses? It seems that Jaire Alexander has given UofL a huge lift. The defensive line has found its moxy. Especially James Hearns rushing the passer.
Of course, we all wonder if Benny Snell will obliterate our defense. UofL has issues with power backs like him. Remember Boston College? Still, I think UofL has found another gear, another level on defense and will find a way to stop UK.
The game has been a nail biter every year since Petrino’s return. Nip and tuck with late scores that secured victory for the winning team. I can’t help but feel UofL is out for blood this year.
The team looks more focused and determined than ever. I think the Governor’s Cup is coming back to Louisville. I believe UofL is going in to dominate.
Lamar Jackson is saving his best for his last regular season game. He remembers the fumble. He wants to make up for it.
Defense wants to make up for making up for making Stephen Johnson look like Lamar Jackson lite.
I believe this will be a beat down more akin to Petrino’s first tenure. Bobby Ball 1.0 is coming back to Lexington Sunday. It’ll all play out at noon on Saturday.
Go Cards baby!
