Postgame Recap: Louisville Earns Hard Fought Victory Over Rival Kentucky

The 8th ranked Louisville Women’s Basketball team rolled into Rupp Arena Saturday for a top 15 matchup with the 14th ranked Kentucky Wildcats. In a hard fought game of runs, Louisville had one more run in them than Kentucky did to win 67-66.

Louisville was led by junior PG Dana Evans who had a team high 18 points and while dishing out 10 assists as well. Senior C Kylee Shook stepped up huge hitting some big 3s and recording a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds. She also had 5 blocks. Senior G Jazmine Jones filled out the stat sheet. She contributed 10 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 assists. Bionca Dunham added 10 points and Yacine Diop provided a big spark off the bench. She had 8 points, 6 boards, and 2 assists. Her effort off the bench seemed to spark Louisville to life in the second half.

UK was led by sophomore G Rhyne Howard. She had 26 points. Tatyana Wyatt and Sabrina Haines each chipped in 12 a piece for the Cats. Wyatt and Howard led UK in rebounds with 5 and 4 respectively.

UK made the game close because of 3-point and free throw shooting. They made 10-19 3-pointers which is good for 56%. They shot 15 free throws and made 12. On the flip side, UofL only 5 of 15 from 3 for 33.3%. They only shot 4 free throws ALL GAME! They made them all. As you can tell by these free throw numbers, the game was a bit lopsided in the officiating department.

Louisville ultimately won because they shot 51.8% from 2-point range and completely dominated the boards; out-rebounding UK 37-17. They really hurt the Wildcats with offensive rebounding, grabbing 15 of them. Those 15 offensive rebounds led to 11 second chance points. Louisville also had a major contribution from the bench with 16 points while UK only mustered 7 points from their bench.

This is the 4th win in a row for UofL in the rivalry series. The seniors on this team will finish their careers having never lost to their bitter in-state rival.

Up Next: Louisville hits the road once more to close out the non-conference schedule. They play Ohio Valley Conference foe UT-Martin at 7 PM EST on Thursday.
