De’Rail Sims And Jalen Mitchell Press Conference Takeaways

University of Louisville Running Backs Coach De’Rail Sims and running back Jalen Mitchell met with the media on Thursday afternoon to discuss a variety of topics. Depth, competition, and offseason takeaways were a handful of the things talked about. Here are the videos and my takeaways from the press conference.

Competition at running back

De’Rail Sims:

“Tt’s been heated and healthy competition. Hassan (Hall) had a really good summer. Getting better every day is the number one thing.”

“Everyone gets their reps in practice and then we grade and chart everything. We’ll get through the scrimmages and see where we are at.”

“We will use as many running backs as it takes to win the game.”

On naming a starter: it will play itself out through fall camp and Satterfield will have the final call at the conclusion.

“You want to keep guys fresh because it’s a long season. That’s what you want in the room. It’s too early to tell what the rotation will look like.”

Jalen Mitchell

“We’ve been coming at each other’s necks. everyone is making plays and doing their best.”

“Keeping fresh legs and having more competition is good. They’re my brothers and I want to see everyone eat. It’s all love.”

Jalen Mitchell

De’Rail Sims:

“He’s done a phenomenal job all spring and summer. He’s a type of guy you have to run out of the building because his mindset and work ethic are off the charts.”

Jalen Mitchell:

“During this offseason I’ve been working on my flexibility, mobility, speed, and becoming better at studying film.”

Mitchell mentions Marshawn Lynch, Adrian Peterson, and Alvin Kamara as guys whose film he’s watched the most this offseason.

Other Personnel

De’Rail Sims:

On Trevion Cooley: “he’s totally different from where he was in the spring. He’s getting better and better. You see flashes of what he’s going to be and that’s promising.”

On Syracuse transfer Jahwar Jordan: “he’s still learning the way we do things and the play book. When he gets in and gets the ball in his hands, you see flashes.”

Jalen Mitchell:

“Hassan (Hall) is someone I’ve been looking up to ever since I got here. He’s gotten better and been more focused.”

“Trevion Cooley is so exciting. He lights up the room. He’s explosive and getting more detailed, and being more focused in his assignment. I’m very proud of him and ready to see what he can do.
