TWICA: September 20th

WHAT A WEEKEND RIGHT CARDS FANS? An almost perfect one in terms of our teams winning and alumni showing out in the big leagues. Keep reading to find out what happened, in This Week in Cardinal Athletics!

Men’s Soccer (4-2)

The Cards had one game the past week, as they traveled to face Syracuse. It was an extremely hard fought battle between the two ACC teams, but Louisville was able to come out on top with a 5-4 win in double overtime. Goals were scored by Pedro Fonseca (2), Aboubacar Camara, Ugo Achara, and then the game winner in 2ot by Josh Jones!

This Week: Tuesday, September 21st Vs Northern Kentucky (7:30 PM, ACC Network Xtra)

Friday, September 24th Vs Boston College (7:30 PM, ACC Network Xtra)

Women’s Soccer (5-1-1)

The Cards opened up ACC play in Coral Gables last week, as they were on the road to play Miami (FL). This match too went into double overtime, and once again the Cards won, by a score of 3-2. Goals were scored by Hayley Howard, Sarah Hernandez (a penalty kick goal), and the game winner by Maisie Whitsett.

This Week: Thursday, September 23rd At Syracuse (6 PM, ACC Network)

Sunday, September 26th Vs #1 Florida State (1 PM)

Women’s Golf

The Cards opened their fall schedule by playing at the Wolverine Invitational. The Cards finished in 6th place overall at the Invitational, led by a 14th place performance by Mairead Martin (5-over-par) and a 19th place performance by Hana Ryskova.

Men’s Tennis

The fall season started off with the Coach Dale Short Shootout at Middle Tennessee State. In day 1, the Cards matched up with Belmont, and Matthew Fung, Alex Wesbrooks, and Kyle Tang won their singles matchups, while David Mizrahi and Tang won a doubles match. In day 2, the Cards were matched up against host Middle Tennessee, and came away with 2 singles wins courtesy of Fung and Wesbrooks, and swept both the doubles matches courtesy of Fung/Wesbrooks and Tang/Mizrahi. In the last day of the event, the Cards played Lipscomb, with the Cards sweeping the singles matches (Fung, Mizrahi, Wesbrooks, Tang), and then also taking one of the doubles matches courtesy of Fung/Wesbrooks.

This Week: September 23rd-27th At Knoxville, Tennessee for the ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championships

Women’s Tennis

The Cards fall season will begin this week as they travel to Purdue to take part in the Purdue Invitational from September 24th-26th.

#5 Field Hockey (7-1)

The Cards had 2 ranked opponents on the docket for this week, as first up they welcomed in the 11th ranked Virginia Cavaliers. They were able to come away with the 1-0 shutout off of a goal from Mattie Tabor!

Then, on Sunday, the Cards welcomed in the #2 ranked Hawkeyes of Iowa (a team who I fully believe should be ranked #1 as of this writing). Unfortunately, the Cards suffered their first loss of the season, falling by a score of 2-0 (but in the grand scheme of things this loss shouldn’t hurt the team that badly).

This Week: Friday, September 24th At #17 Duke (6 PM)

#5 Volleyball (10-0)

2 HUGE games happened last week for the Volleyball squad, as first they welcomed in bitter rival UK. A hard fought game all around (and credit where credit is due, this Kentucky team looks almost as good as they did during their National Championship season last year), BUT, the Cards this time were able to come away with the 3-2 win (17-25, 25-20, 25-22, 20-25, 15-9). This was our first non-sweep win in the last several games, as well as our first win against UK in about a decade! The Cards were led in kills by Claire Chaussee (18) and Anna DeBeer (14), 3 aces from Aiko Jones, 9 blocks by Amaya Tillman, 44 assists by Tori Dilfer, and 18 digs by Elena Scott.

Then, the Cards traveled to Lincoln, Nebraska to take on the #6 ranked Cornhuskers of Nebraska (the same team that our head coach Dani Busboom Kelly played for during her playing career). The Cards once again got back to their sweeping ways, beating Nebraska in straight sets 3-0 (25-17, 25-20, 25-18). The Cards were led by 11 kills from Anna Stevenson, 10 kills a piece from DeBeer and Jones, 2 aces from Jones, 7 blocks from Jones and 6 blocks a piece from Stevenson and Tillman (and let me say, the Cards’ blocking here was some of the best I’ve seen in quite a while from any team), 34 assists from Dilfer, and 14 digs from Scott.

This Week: Friday, September 24th Vs Miami (FL) (7 PM)

Sunday, September 26th Vs Florida State (1 PM)

Football (1-1)

WE ALL SAW THAT RIGHT??? Part of why this weekend was so amazing for Cards fans was the game against the visiting University of Central Florida (GOLDEN) Knights. A game that we prevailed in 42-35. A game that saw improved play calling on both sides of the ball, and a game that saw the fans explode with excitement at the belief that this win could spark our team to more wins than were originally thought by many. While I can only begin to imagine what those inside the Stadium were feeling when we won, I know I personally couldn’t be happier with our Cards performance. The Cards were led on offense by 265 yards, with 1 TD and 1 interception, by Malik Cunningham, a TD through the air on a trick play from Braden Smith to Trevion Cooley, 99 yards and 2 TD’s on the ground from Cunningham, 74 yards and a TD on the ground from Jalen Mitchell, and were led on defense by sacks from C.J. Avery and Yasir Abdullah, a crucial pass break up from Qwynnterrio Cole, and of course, the play everybody will remember for a life time, the pick 6 by true freshman Jaylin Alderman (66 yards) to win the game for the Cards!

That will about do it for this week Card fans. But before I go, a special shout out to both Teddy Bridgewater and Lamar Jackson for winning their NFL games yesterday. How special is it seeing 2 NFL QB’s at the top of their respective games, leading their teams to important wins. Its great knowing that both of these great dudes are Cardinals for life! Also, seeing all the pictures and videos of this past weekend’s Louisville Live event, made me realize how amazing our 2 basketball programs truly are. By the looks of it, that atmosphere was truly insane, and it looks like both of our squads are coming for that championship with a vengeance! Anyways, make sure to stay tuned to CardinalSportsZone for all of your UofL updates and news, and as always, Go Cards!!!
