Scott Satterfield Named Dodd Trophy Coach of the Week

Louisville’s head coach earns award after Cardinals dominate No. 10 Wake Forest

ATLANTA (OCT. 31, 2022) – Officials from the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Foundation and Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl today announced that Louisville head football coach Scott Satterfield has been selected as The Dodd Trophy Coach of the Week presented by PNC.

The Dodd Trophy Coach of the Week award honors a football coach who led his team to a significant victory during the previous week, while also embodying the award’s three pillars of scholarship, leadership and integrity.

The Louisville Cardinals stunned No. 10 Wake Forest 48-21 on Saturday at Cardinal Stadium to win their third-consecutive game. After trailing 14-13 at the half, the Cardinals were fueled by a third quarter that saw the team force six turnovers and score 35 points, including two pick-sixes. This ties the most points ever scored against an AP top-10 opponent in one quarter and the Cardinals became the first FBS team in at least 15 years to force eight turnovers in a single half.

With the win, Louisville secured its first top-10 victory as an unranked team since the 2002 season, while its 48 points marked the most points the program has scored against a top-10 team since 2016.

“Coach Satterfield did a phenomenal job last week preparing his players for a fight against a top-10 opponent and capturing the program’s third-straight victory,” said Jim Terry, chairman of the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Foundation. “Coach Dodd would have applauded how prepared the team was coming out of halftime to post a historic third quarter performance that will go down in the record books.”

Satterfield came to Louisville in 2019 after six seasons with Appalachian State, where he compiled a 51-24 record and three Sun Belt Conference titles. Now in his fourth season at the helm, Satterfield has totaled 23 wins and secured two bowl appearances, including leading Louisville to its first bowl game in five years during his first season.

In the classroom, Louisville has soared to new heights under his guidance, recording an Academic Progress Rate of 988 last academic year, the ninth highest mark in the country. His student-athletes also posted a Graduation Success Rate of 93, which was the fourth highest nationally.

Off the field, Satterfield has participated in the annual Peach Bowl Challenge, the nation’s premier golf event where current and former coaches play for a share of a $330,000 charity purse. Over the last two years, he has raised a total of $30,000 at the event for Love City, Inc., an organization that looks to impact the communities in Louisville through education, sports and social engagement.

“Coach Satterfield currently has the Cardinals excelling both on the football field and in the classroom,” said Peach Bowl, Inc. CEO & President Gary Stokan. “It cannot be understated what he has already done for these student-athletes and the Louisville football program as a whole. The Cardinals also look to have a bright future with the recruiting class he has coming in, and we look forward to hosting them in our Kickoff Game next Labor Day weekend as well.”

The Dodd Trophy presented by PNC– along with the Dodd Trophy Coach of the Week Award – celebrates the head coach of a FBS team who enjoys success on the gridiron, while also stressing the importance of scholarship, leadership and integrity.

A panel consisting of all previous winners, national media, a member of the Dodd family and a College Football Hall of Fame member will identify the final list of potential recipients at the conclusion of the 2022 season. The winner of the 2022 Dodd Trophy will be announced in Atlanta during the week of the College Football Playoff Semifinal at the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl.
