For the first time in three years, the NCAA Women’s Volleyball Final Four will be without the Louisville Cardinals. Losing is never easy, and dropping the final three sets after jumping all over Pitt in the first two sets of the Elite Eight is heartbreaking. But thems the breaks sometimes. I for one am still celebrating all of their success this season! It’s not easy to be this consistently good. Getting to the mountaintop one time is hard, staying there takes discipline, buy-in, and uncommon leadership.
The Louisville Cardinals’ ascent to the mountaintop of college volleyball is a testament to their unwavering commitment to excellence, a narrative that has been bolstered by high national rankings in kills per set and hitting percentage. But this sustained success isn’t possible without the leadership of head coach Dani Busboom Kelly. Since taking over the program, Busboom Kelly has not only instilled a winning culture but has also meticulously constructed a squad that is as tenacious on defense as it is explosive on offense. But her role goes beyond the tactical dimensions; she has been instrumental in fostering team unity, resilience, and a competitive edge – all of which have become hallmarks of the Cardinals. Under her guidance, the program has seen an influx of talented recruits, increased national recognition, and a significant leap in overall performance. With a coaching philosophy that emphasizes adaptability and player development, Busboom Kelly has turned Louisville into the place to be for college volleyball players and a perennial contender on the national scene, setting a new standard for excellence in collegiate volleyball.
A former standout volleyball player at Nebraska, Bussboom Kelly was one of only two players to rank among NU’s all-time leaders in both digs (1,281, second) and assists (2,873, eighth). Just like her playing days, her career as a coach reflects a relentless pursuit of excellence. “During my career, I switched positions from setter to libero and I feel like that solidified my decision as I had so many different experiences and felt as though I had a lot of share in the sport of volleyball.” She has a keen eye for detail and an intrinsic understanding of the game, and Busboom Kelly has quickly become one of the most influential figures in college volleyball.
Since assuming her role at the University of Louisville, Coach Busboom Kelly has been the linchpin for the program’s meteoric rise to national prominence. Under her tenure, the Cardinals have morphed into a volleyball juggernaut, combining grit with grace, and strategy with spontaneity. Her coaching philosophy has been the cornerstone, one that demands the utmost discipline while nurturing raw talent into dominant on-court intelligence. “One of the most important factors has been staying true to ourselves and really appreciating everyone’s strengths. I let my staff have a lot of control as well as the players which has led to so much trust and consistency.” With each season, Louisville’s volleyball team hasn’t just competed—they’ve set the standard, challenging the hierarchy of long-established programs, like the one Busboom Kelly played for.
Yet, it is not solely in the x’s and o’s where Coach Busboom Kelly has made her mark. She stands at the forefront of acknowledging and actively addressing the mental health challenges that student-athletes today face. “Louisville has done some amazing things in regards to mental health. I believe we have tripled-quadrupled the mental health staff available to student-athletes and coaches. We certainly encourage our athletes to use those resources and make it a priority within their weekly schedules.” Recognizing the heavy burden of competing at an elite level, her approach holistically encompasses the physical and mental fortitude of her players. This stance has cultivated an environment where athletes can openly discuss their struggles, making mental wellness a priority rather than an afterthought.
Busboom Kelly’s impact on the game of volleyball goes beyond the bounds of the Louisville courts. For countless young girls, she is the embodiment of the heights women can reach in sports leadership. In an industry where female coaches are disproportionately outnumbered, her accomplishments are a standard, proving to aspiring female athletes and coaches that glass ceilings are meant to be shattered. “I hope I can show young women they can be strong enough to be in leadership roles and balance a family and social life. I don’t shy away from bringing my family around the program and hope they can see you can be successful mixing different parts of your lives.”
In the recent turmoil that has plagued Louisville athletics, DBK has been not only one of the bright spots, but her and her team have arguably been the brightest. A national championship and two consecutive Final Four appearances and a few bounces away from a third have highlighted the fall seasons for the last few years. Her role in building a formidable program at Louisville is indelible, right up there with Dan McDonell and the baseball team or Jeff Walz and the women’s hoops team. Her story is not just one of coaching success; it is about inspiring change, both within the lines of the volleyball court and in the perceptions of society. Coach Busboom Kelly is more than a coach; she’s a catalyst for progress, championing a future where success is defined by the ability to lead, inspire, and ultimately, win.
