Pregame Notes:
Good afternoon Card Nation, Coach Brohm takes his #15-ranked team into South Bend to take on the #16-ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Louisville won the last meeting between the two teams last year 33-20. Louisville will be facing a familiar foe at quarterback in Riley Leonard (Duke). Louisville is currently 1-0 in the ACC, and looking to move to 2-0 for the 2nd consecutive year under coach Brohm.
1st Quarter:
Louisville got off to a great start, with a forced fumble and recovery on the kick return. Tyler Shough connected with Isaac Brown for the 10-yard touchdown pass. On Notre Dame’s first possession, Love scored on a 6-yard run. Tyler Shough fumbled on a 46-yard designed QB run, a fumble that the Fighting Irish recovered. After the Cards jumped to a 7-0 lead, Notre Dame scored 21 consecutive points. Louisville trailed after the first quarter for the first time all season, 7-21.
2nd Quarter:
Sophomore linebacker, Stanquan Clark forced a fumble that was recovered by Louisville. Just like they did in the first quarter, the Cards scored a touchdown off the turnover, this time it was Shough to Ja’Corey Brooks for the 5-yard touchdown pass. As Louisville was driving with a chance to tie the game at 21, Brooks bobbled a pass from Shough, that turned into Tyler’s first thrown interception. The Louisville defense held their own and forced a field goal.
Halftime Stats:
T.O.P: 16:45
Passing Yards: 110
Rushing Yards: 102
Sacks:
T.Os: 2 Forced Fumbles
3rd Quarter:
The Cards defense showed why they are considered one of the best in the country. Louisville held Notre Dame to under 50 yards in the quarter, but more importantly, kept Notre Dame off of the scoreboard. Unfortunately, Louisville wasn’t able to sustain any of their offensive drives in the quarter and Notre Dame took a 24-14 lead into the final quarter.
4th Quarter:
Brock Travelstead connected on a 57-yard field goal to break the scoring drought for both teams in the second half. Notre Dame answered Louisville’s field goal with a touchdown pass of their own, to extend their lead to 31-17. Louisville answered with a 24-yard pass from Shough to Brooks, to cut the lead to 7 (24-31). Louisville’s defense came up huge with the defensive stop, to give the offense a chance at tie the game. Shough’s deep attempt to Lacy on 4th down fell incomplete and sealed the win for Notre Dame. Cards fall 24-31 to Notre Dame.
Final Stats:
Passing Yards: 264 (3TDS)
Rushing Yards: 131
Post Game Notes:
Louisville suffers their first loss of the season (3-1), as they fell 24-31 to Notre Dame in South Bend. Louisville’s defense held Notre Dame to 60 yards of total offense in the 2nd (17) & 3rd quarters (43), the offense struggled to get any points on crucial drives. Coming into today’s game, Louisville and Georgia were the only teams in the Top 25 that hadn’t committed a turnover. Louis committed 3 turnovers in the game, and 2 in the first quarter. Louisville will return back home to the friendly field of L & N Stadium next week as they take on SMU.
