TWICA: December 2nd – 8th

This week was a busy week in Cardinal Athletics with Volleyball, Women’s Basketball, & Men’s basketball all in action.

Volleyball (27-5):

Volleyball had a crazy week with the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament. In the first match with Chicago St, the Cardinals hit .290 and had 45 kills in the sweep of the Cougars on Friday evening. The victory secured a return match with #8 Seed Northern Iowa.

Northern Iowa came out swinging on the Cardinals taking the 1st Set 28-26. Seniors Anna DeBeer & Charitie Luper double doubles helped the Cardinals taking 2nd & 4th Set. This put the Cardinals and Panthers into a decisive 5th Set. The Panthers jumped out to an 11-5 lead. The Cardinals came back behind service errors on the Panthers & they took the match in a 22-20 5th Set.

Up Next: The Cardinals host Purdue in the Sweet Sweet 16 at Freedom Hall. Their Match with Purdue is slated to start 30 Minutes after the ending of the 1st Matchup of (6) Florida vs (2) Stanford on ESPN2. If the Cardinals make it past Purdue they will back in Freedom Hall for Regional Final Saturday at 7:30pm on ESPN2.

#22 Women’s Basketball (5-4):

Coach Jeff Walz & the Cardinals had a very rough week with this team as they fell to #11 Oklahoma & #2 UConn. The Cardinals jumped out 41-29 lead at the half against Oklahoma. The Sooners answered back with a 29-12 4th Quarter which sealed the victory. Olivia Cochran had 17pts and 9 Rebounds to lead the Cardinals. Then, the Cardinals traveled up to NYC to face the #2 Huskies and UConn jumped out early with 28-10 1st quarter lead on the Cardinals and didn’t look back. Freshman Imari Berry led the Cardinals with 10pts. UConn defeated the Cardinals 85-52

Up Next: The Cardinals host Grambling State Thursday at 7pm before hosting NC State on Sunday at 1pm on ABC.

Men’s Baskeball (5-3):

The Cardinals hosted #23 Ole Miss on Tuesday night. The Rebels defeated the Cardinals 86-63 beyond a 20 point performancefrom former Card Dre Davis. Chucky Hepburn led the Cardinals with 19pts. Ole Miss as a team shot 56.7% which was a season high for the Rebels. Then, the Cardinals hosted #9 Duke Sunday evening. The Cardinals jumped out early on the Blue Devils with 10-3 lead after 1st timeout & outplayed Duke the ghost 30 minutes of the game. The Cards got tired due to the short bench the final 10 minutes. In the end the Cardinals fell to Blue Devils 76-65. Terrence Edwards led all scorers with 21 points off the bench.

Up Next: The Cardinals host UTEP on Wednesday at 7pm before traveling to Lexington on Saturday.

Football (8-4):

The Cardinals discovered their bowl fate. They will face the Washington Huskies in the Tony The Tiger Sun Bowl on December 31st at 2pm on CBS.
