Chucky Hepburn scored 22, Teddy Ballgame added 21, & J’Vonne added 13 & 8 as the Cards couldn’t recoup from a late first half run to fall 89-75.
The first few minutes go exactly how you expect. A phantom shooting foul on Chucky. No buckets until the 17:23 mark. A 7-0 Chucky run. A real back & forth sparing match. Good defense on both ends and not much scoring. That changed.
3 by Rayne, 3 by TE2, & matching scoring by Creighton puts this at a 16-15 Cardinal deficit with 13 minutes remaining. A great defensive stand by Waterman & Scott, after a horrific Noah three, gives the Cards the ball back & Hadley immediately makes them pay. 17-16 Cards.
The two teams are trading shots the first ten minutes. Creighton goes on the first run, a 8-0 in about 90 seconds.
The Cards go on their own run, but they’re matched by Creighton. They are not backing down. Creighton goes on a monstrous 12-2 run which puts the Cards down 40-25 with 4 minutes left. Disaster loading. They’ve got to make adjustments going forward. With 2 minutes remaining it’s 47-27. Sh*t. This got ugly fast. The Cards do go on a 5-0 run to end the half & it’s 49-34 at half time. The Cards have a LOT to do in the second half. The first 10 minutes are key.
Creighton shooting lights out in the first half from the 3 & the field. Louisville only shot 2 free throws vs 1711 for Creighton. Chucky & J’vonne with 2 fouls at the half. The Cards only turn the ball over 4 times in the first half. They won’t keep this pace up. They shouldn’t.
The Cards cut it to 13 after a quick Chucky bucket, but Creighton does not let off the gas. 17-point lead with 18 minutes left. Woof. The refs refuse to call this game the same both ways. It’s like the NCAA wanted to make sure everyone knew we were an 8 seed. Ridiculous.
Reyne gets hurt again, Pat gets T’d, I’ve stopped doing the recap. This is insane. So many times this season we’ve been the team that got hot & couldn’t be touched. Today the roles were reversed. Brutal ending to a very special season. Thank you to the #25Strong & it’s still Go Cards for life!
