Ones To Watch: SMU

Welcome to this week’s edition of Ones to Watch. I will show you the statistical leaders on the team, talk to you about some things I observed on film, & whatever else catches my eye. I will not be stepping on JK’s toes for his EYNTK piece (much), but giving you a little to be on the lookout for. FYI, if you haven’t checked out EYNTK I suggest you do. It’s fantastic. Here we go…

The Mustangs are averaging 32.2 ppg this season. They are easily the second best team on the schedule like we all assumed going into the season. They did have a rough patch but corrected the course and are sitting at a stellar 7-3 record. They have rushed for a total of 1221 & thrown for 2845 through the air in ten games. They are averaging 406.6 yards per game. Their starting QB, Kevin Jennings, has the following stat line so far. He has completed 226-349 passes (64.7%), thrown 9 interceptions, 2810 yards, 21 TD’s with a long of 75. He is averaging 281 yards through the air per game this season. The offense has committed 15 turnovers.

Receiving wise, Jordan Hudson (42 for 595 & 4 TD), Romello Brinson (40 for 582 & 3 TD), & Yamir Knight (37 for 460 & 4 TD) are leading the way this season. All 3 have 60+ yard Touchdowns this season. 4 other WR’s have 2 or more TD’s. They spread it out.

On the ground, TJ Hardin (133 rushes for 613 yds & 6 TD), Chris Johnson Jr. ( 46 rushes for 321 yds & 3 TD) & Derrick McFall (26 for 146 yards & 4 TD) lead the way on the ground. They avg 122 ypg as a team.

Their defense has forced 26 turnovers this season. That’s almost 3 per game! They have sacked the opposing QB 32 times this season. SMU has given up 23 TD’s. They have only allowed 4 rushing TD’s all year.

Their leading tacklers are Safety Isaiah Nwokobia (77), Safety Ahmaad Moses (73), & LB Brandon Booker (46). Isaiah Smith leads the team with 7.5 sacks & 16 TFL’s. Moses leads the team with 5 Int’s 2 FR. They have 4 guys with 5 or more sacks.

Special teams: FG’s 13-21 61% and a long of 51. Only attempted one over 49 yards. XP 24-26

Their punter avg 42.8 ypp

The Cards are 0-3 all-time vs SMU

This will be the forth different venue the game has been played in.
