Cardinal News and Notes: Sunday Afternoon Edition

*Men’s Basketball– The 14/15 ranked Cards (14-4, 2-3) defeated DePaul (10-7, 1-4) on Saturday 76-59. It was a good day for the Smiths, as Russ Smith scored 25 points, and Chris Smith added 20 points. Russ also had 6 assists, 5 rebounds, and 4 steals. Gorgui Dieng finally had another double-double with 13 points and 14 rebounds.

After losing 4 of their last 5 games, and looking bad doing it, the Cards had to have this game. A loss would have hurt much more than the win helps, but a home loss to DePaul would have just been too much.

UofL has no time to celebrate the win because they now turn around and face a good Marquette team on the road Monday afternoon. The Golden Eagles (14-4, 3-2) and Cardinals always play close games, and this one will probably be the same. Full preview coming later…

*Women’s Basketball– The 16/15 ranked Cards  (14-4, 3-2) lost a tough one on the road on Saturday to 8/9 ranked Rutgers (15-2, 4-0). Shawnta’ Dyer led the Cards with 16 points and 9 rebounds, but they fell in overtime 71-68. UofL’s next game will be Wednesday as they host Providence (10-8, 2-3).

*Swimming & Diving– UofL had a double dual meet on Saturday in Cincinnati, OH. They faced Cincinnati and Eastern Michigan, dominating them both. The men’s team beat Cincinnati 250-50, winning 13 events. They beat Eastern Michigan 209-91. For the women, they won 11 events and beat Cincinnati 223-75 and Eastern Michigan 217-82. The men’s  next meet will be Friday, January 20 in Dallas, TX in the Men’s SMU Classic. The women return in a co-ed dual meet at Indiana on Saturday, January 28.

*Track & Field– UofL had 12 top 5 finishes at the Kentucky Invitational on Saturday. Eight Cardinals qualified for the Big East Indoor Championships, which will be February 18 and 19 in New York.
