LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Three University of Louisville men’s basketball upperclassmen student-athletes have been named to the 2012-13 National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Honors Court, which recognizes college basketball student-athletes who have excelled academically.
Cardinal upperclassmen Peyton Siva, Stephan Van Treese and Mike Marra were among more than 700 student-athletes from 285 institutions which were honored. To qualify for inclusion in the NABC Honors Court, a student-athlete must be a junior or senior, have a cumulative 3.2 GPA or higher at the conclusion of the 2012-13 season and must have matriculated at least one year at their current institution.
Louisville’s career leader in steals (254) and second in assists (677), Siva averaged 10.0 points and 5.7 assists as a senior. The sociology major was the Most Outstanding Player of the BIG EAST Championship for the second straight year, joining Georgetown’s Patrick Ewing as the only players to attain that honor twice, and was a Final Four All-Tournament and an All-Midwest Region selection. A second-team Academic All-America selection, Siva was honored as the BIG EAST Scholar Athlete of the Year, received the 2013 Frances Pomeroy Naismith Award and was named to the Allstate NABC Good Works Team. In the national championship game against Michigan, Siva totaled 18 points, six rebounds, five assists and four steals with just two turnovers.
A sport administration major, Van Treese was a top reserve at center for the Cardinals in their national title run. He averaged 3.7 rebounds in nine postseason games, including leading the Cardinals with eight rebounds against Villanova in the BIG EAST quarterfinals and grabbing seven boards against North Carolina A&T in the NCAA Second Round. His 11.2 rebounds per 40 minutes average was second on the team to Gorgui Dieng (12.1).
Marra reinjured his left knee in preseason practice and was sidelined for the season. A 6-foot-5 guard from Smithfield, R.I., Marra averaged 6.2 points and two assists, while burying 45 three-point goals as a sophomore in 2010-11, starting 11 games. He served as a student assistant coach. A sport administration major, Marra served as a student assistant coach during the Cardinals’ national championship season.
