Senior guard Shoni Schimmel was named to the John R. Wooden Award Women’s Preseason Top 30 today the Los Angeles Athletic Club has announced.  The team is comprised of 30 student-athletes who, based on last year’s individual performance and team records, are the early front-runners for college basketball’s most prestigious honor. The list is chosen by a preseason poll of national college women’s basketball media members.

Schimmel was been a key player in the Cardinals’ success last season. Louisville finished as the 2013 NCAA Runner-Up with a 29-9 overall record. The Cardinal finished the 2013 season ranked third in the Coaches Poll. She averaged 16.5 points per game in the NCAA Tournament.

Schimmel was named the Most Outstanding Player for the Oklahoma City Regional. She also earned WBCA All-Region honors and first team All-BIG EAST honors. She leads the Cardinals in scoring and assists with 14.2 points and 3.6 assists per game. She also ranks second on the team in free throw percentage, shooting 81.1 percent. Schimmel earned BIG EAST Player of the Week honors after scoring a career-high 38 points against South Florida. She finished league play averaging 15.8 points and 3.5 assists per game.

Connecticut boasts four players on the preseason Top 30 list: Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis, Bria Hartley, Stefanie Dolson, and Breanna Stewart, all of whom played key roles in the school’s title run in 2013. Other names of note include Louisville’s Shoni Schimmel, who made her mark on the national scene with an impressive performance in the 2013 NCAA Tournament, and Florida International’s Jerica Coley, the country’s top scorer a year ago at 26.3 points per game.

The ACC led all conferences with nine selections, followed by the Pac-12 and newly formed American Athletic Conference with five.
