If you are planning to make the trip to South Bend for the Louisville-Notre Dame football game this weekend, you may want to read the guidelines on tailgating up there first. No charcoal grills, tents with walls, or loud speakers. The biggest problem for UofL fans? Tailgating is NOT allowed after kickoff. Surely this wouldn’t be a problem at a road game, but you never know!
Here are the rules for tailgating straight from Notre Dame’s website:
Where to Go
Plan ahead and check out the different parking areas available around campus. Whether you have a parking pass or not, be sure to follow the signage to your destination lot. Parking attendants are plentiful on Game Day and are there to help. If you are traveling with multiple cars, make sure everyone arrives at the same time, as holding adjacent spots for others is not allowed. Also be sure each car has a parking pass, as one pass permits one vehicle into the lot.
What to Wear
With many tailgates beginning early and going up until game time, it’s also important to dress for the weather. Depending on the weather, sunscreen, ponchos, and layers can be important items to pack on Game Day!
Need to pick up some Irish gear? Head to any of the Notre Dame Shops, just west of Notre Dame Avenue, such as the Bookstore and the Varsity Shop, to grab all the Irish apparel you could ever want!
What to Bring
Grills
If you plan to grill, remember that charcoal grills are prohibited on University property.
Propane grills are permitted, but please note gas cylinders must be under 20 lbs.
Food & Drink
When planning your spread and bar for your big tailgate, remember that kegs are not permitted in University parking lots.
Additionally, be sure to bring plenty of water. Hydration is key to every Game Day, hot or cold.
The Extras
When you’re packing up your plates, cups, chairs, cornhole, etc. be sure to remember that while tailgate canopies are permitted, walled tents are prohibited.
Speakers that can stand alone, are excessively loud, or are connected to an amplifier are prohibited.
What to Do
Green Your Tailgate
Remember to work to keep your tailgate green with help from the Office of Sustainability. Recycling bags are available in the parking lots for your convenience!
Have Fun!
At the end of the day, you’re there for one simple reason – to enjoy Game Day! You take care of packing the car and grilling the burgers. Our Guest Services team, parking staff, police officers, and University staff will take care of the rest!
In Case of Emergency
In the event of an emergency, let a uniformed security officer or lot supervisor know right away. Notre Dame Security Police can be reached at (574) 631-5555, or you can also text IRISH and the issue to 69050.
We also encourage that if you see something, say something! If something raises your concern for any reason, please call or text to let us know and our Notre Dame Security Police will look into the situation right away. Our staff is ready to help and they are only one call or text away!
