For the fifth year, many of our friends and I are putting on a charity golf tournament in Louisville, Kentucky. Our friends started calling this tournament the “Charlie George Invitational” or CGI, as I have helped lead the tournament each year.
For the past four years, participants of the tournament have donated towards a charity. We are continuing that tradition this year by honoring and supporting the following three charities. Additionally, we are partnering with the Community Foundation of Louisville, the largest organized charitable foundation in Kentucky (www.cflouisville.org), and have created a charitable checking fund called the CGI Charitable Giving Fund.

Ryann Tewell and Steven Vanover: On Friday, August 21st, the night before the CGI tournament, the 104 players participating in the CGI will be hosting a fundraiser at Molly Malone’s in St. Matthews from 7:00-10:00 PM to honor the lives of both Ryann Tewell and Steven Vanover. A donation box will be set up for each of them. Both Mr. Tewell and Mr. Vanover gave us their blessing and permission to put on this event and will be present along with members of their families. Donations in honor of Ryann will go to Sacred Heart Academy, and donations for Steven will go to the Steven Vanover Memorial Research and Scholarship Fund through the University of Louisville JB School of Engineering.

2015 CGI Tournament – Saturday, August 22nd:
Pete Nochta: As many of you know, our friend Pete Nochta was recently diagnosed with Lymphoma. This year the CGI will also include Pete and his family in our charitable fundraising. Saturday, August 22nd, the day of the CGI, will focus on raising donations for Pete and his family to help with the cost of some of his medical expenses. All donations to support Pete will go directly to the GoFundMe Account that has already been set up on his behalf. If Pete feels up for it, he is going to try to participate in this year’s CGI Tournament. Pete is also going to try to hit the “opening tee shot” to start this year’s tournament.

Ryann Tewell:
Ryann Marie Tewell was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church where she attended grade school. Ryann was a 2008 graduate of Sacred Heart Academy, attended The College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, VA on an athletic scholarship in gymnastics. Ryann transferred to and was a proud alumnus of Bellarmine University, where she graduated magna cum laude in 2012 with her bachelor’s in economics and business administration. Ryann was a financial analyst at Humana and previously worked in finance at General Electric, where she had many valued friendships. Ryann was a member of Champion Gymnastics through 2008, where she was a seven-time Kentucky State Gymnastics Champion. Ryann had an incredible sense of humor, an infectious laugh and a beautiful smile. Ryann was very health conscious and was an avid runner. She had a tremendous work ethic and was very goal oriented. She enjoyed life and will be missed by us all.
Steven Vanover:
Steven Daniel Vanover spent only 24 years on this earth but his impact on those around him will last for eternity. Steven was a larger than life character who inherently placed family, friends, faith and education above all else. He was born on April 25, 1990 in Louisville, Kentucky. Steven was a 2008 graduate of St. Xavier High School and went on to receive a Master of Engineering Degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Louisville J.B. Speed School of Engineering in 2013. Steven was a die-hard Louisville Cardinal fan who regularly attended home and away football & basketball games. He was an alumnus of the Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity where he served on the Executive Council for three years and was Vice President of the Alumni Association for one year. Steven was diagnosed with sarcoma, a rare soft tissue cancer, in December of 2013. Steven passed away on March 12, 2015. Steven’s battle with sarcoma was one of class and inspiration. Steven didn’t let cancer define him. He was the person who would finish chemotherapy treatments and play one-on-one basketball games against his soon-to-be father-in-law or go golfing or fishing. Steven had an innate ability to provide joy to all of those around him. Steven impacted those around him with respect, selflessness & sympathy. These qualities are rare, especially in a 24-year old. Steven may be gone, but his legacy will be carried on through this scholarship and support of sarcoma research.
Pete Nochta – more on his story:
Former Louisville tight end Pete Nochta is dealing with someone no one his age should have to deal with, and he needs your help. On Thursday, May 14, Pete went in for a biopsy where they removed a portion of a painful tumor from his knee. In less than a week, he was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. “Cancer” is a scary word. After numerous tests that involved various scans and bone marrow being extracted from his pelvis, he was given his prognosis. Less than two weeks from his original diagnosis he was told that he has the Activated B-Cell subtype of Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma.
Lymphoma occurs when cells of the immune system called lymphocytes grow and multiply uncontrollably. Cancerous lymphocytes can travel to many parts of the body, including the lymph nodes, spleen, bone marrow, blood, or other organs, and form a tumor. Lymphoma is an aggressive and fast-growing cancer and immediate treatment is incredibly important. The locations where Pete’s cancer was found determined that his case was considered “Stage 4”.
Because the cancer has rapidly spread from his knee to other areas,including his femur, pelvis, chest and neck, a port was surgically inserted into his chest so that the chemotherapy medication can go directly into his heart to attack the cancer near his vital organs. Whether you know Pete through school, his time playing football at UofL, coaching at Purdue, WKU and Louisville, working at TEKsystems, or met him once, you know that he will continue to fight through his chemo treatments and beat this disease with his support system by his side. Cancer doesn’t only come with emotional stress but also a huge financial burden. Any size donation helps and is greatly appreciated.
