Western Kentucky football…aka Louisville South?

There are two pretty good college football teams in this state. One of them, of course, is Louisville. The other sort of looks like another version of Louisville, and that is Western Kentucky. They are looking so much like another Louisville team that the question could be asked: is Western Kentucky becoming Louisville South? Now maybe not, because they are good enough on their own that they don’t really need to be compared to another in-state team. But I am mainly talking about how their roster is shaping up.

There are Louisville transfers, kids from the city of Louisville, and coaches from Louisville. Let’s take a look at all of the Louisville connections on the roster for the Hilltoppers in 2016 so far…

Coaches

Jeff Brohm – We have to start at the top with the head coach. Brohm is a Louisville native who attended Trinity High School and played QB at the University of Louisville. He was also on the coaching staff from 2003-2008. Surely, I don’t need to tell you much more about Jeff Brohm. You probably already know about him.

Greg Brohm – That’s right, another Brohm. Greg is the Director of Football Operations. Greg also attended Trinity High School and then played football at UofL from 1988-1992 as a wide receiver.

Mike Cassity – Not a native of Louisville, but of Fort Campbell, Kentucky. Cassity was the defensive coordinator for Louisville from 2004-2007, which were the peak years during Bobby Petrino’s first stint at UofL (plus one bonus year after Petrino was gone).

Don Dunn – Dunn is from Louisville and coaches the defensive tackles.

Bennett Dettlinger – Offensive Graduate Assistant from Louisville. Attended Male High School.

Players

Keith Brown – Linebacker that is transferring from Louisville to WKU to finish his career.

Nick Dawson-Brents – Another linebacker that will join WKU in 2016 after transferring from Louisville.

Tyler Ferguson – Quarterback transfer from Louisville. He was in the QB race in 2015 before deciding to transfer. He was going to join Bobby Petrino at WKU anyway, so he ends up in a spot that he intended to be at.

*These are the players listed on the 2015 roster that would be back in 2016. If any of them are transferring and I wasn’t aware, I apologize.*

Daeshawn Bertram – Linebacker from Trinity High School.

Canon Jackson – Linebacker from Trinity High School.

Scott Liebert – Offensive lineman from Trinity High School.

Joe Brown – Defensive back from Butler High School.

Will Bush – Wide receiver from Ballard High School.

Jake Collins – Kicker from St. Xavier High School.

Juwan Gardner – Defensive back from DuPont Manual High School.

Jordan Gonzalez – Defensive back from DuPont Manual High School.

Ty’Ron Horton – Defensive lineman from DuPont Manual High School.

Darmontre Warr – Running back from DuPont Manual High School.

Al Jackson – Defensive back from Seneca High School.

Desmond Maxwell – Tight end from PRP High School.

Taywan Taylor – Wide receiver from PRP High School.

Der’Quione Mobley – Linebacker from Central High School.

Anthony Wales – Running back from Central High School.

Matt Nord – Offensive lineman from DeSales High School.

Nathan Roush – Defensive back from DeSales High School.

Deon Yelder – Tight end from Southern High School.

2016 Commits

Lamarius Kinslow – Linebacker from Fern Creek High School.
