Pre-Season All ACC Football Team Announced

Three Cards Selected to All-ACC Preseason Squad

The three members on the preseason squad were the most for the Cardinals since joining the league in 2014.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville football team had three players selected to the 2016 Atlantic Coast Conference Preseason Team announced Wednesday by the conference office.

The team was selected by a vote of 191 media members who were credentialed for last week’s ACC Football Kickoff in Charlotte.

Three defensive players – linebackers Keith Kelsey and Devonte Fields and defensive tackle DeAngelo Brown were selected to the All-ACC squad for the first time. The three members were the most for the Cardinals since joining the league in 2014.

Kelsey, a linebacker from Gainesville, Fla., led the Cardinals in tackles with 107 – the first player since Preston Brown in 2012 to record over 100 tackles in a season. Kelsey, a first team all-ACC selection, recorded a career-best 15 tackles versus Houston, registered 12.0 tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks in guiding the Cardinals’ defense to another top-20 finish.

A native of Fort Worth, Texas, Fields, who transferred from Trinity Valley Junior College, led the nation in tackles for loss per game at 1.73 and paced the Cardinals with 11.0 sacks – the highest total by a Cardinal since Marcus Smith recorded 14.5 in 2013. An all-ACC honorable mention selection last season, Fields was fourth in the league with 0.85 sacks per game and was third in tackles for loss with 22.5. He closed the year with 5.5 sacks in his final two contests, including 3.0 in the 27-21 win over Texas A&M in the Music City Bowl.

A 6-foot-0, 310-pounder, Brown recorded a career-best 40 tackles in 12 starts at the defensive tackle position. Recording a personal-high 2.0 sacks, Brown also totaled 6.5 tackles for loss to help the Cards finish in the top 20 nationally against the run.  A native of Savannah, Ga., Brown totaled a season-high six tackles in a season-opening loss to Auburn and posted sacks in wins over Samford and NC State.

Louisville opens the 2016 season on Sept. 1 at Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium versus Charlotte at 7 p.m.
