SOUTH BEND, IND. The University of Louisville track and field teams finished with five wins, including four on the women’s side to propel the Cardinal women to a first place finish. The men had recorded a win in the long jump to finish fourth on the day. Overall, the Cardinals finished with 17 top three finishes on Saturday afternoon.
“We were able to get a lot accomplished today,” said head coach Dale Cowper. ”I was particularly pleased with the way our women’s squad came out and competed across all event areas. It was exciting to see some of our freshman begin to step forward. Brooke Raglin, Gabriela Leon, and Dorcas Wasike were each able to pick up their first of many collegiate victories today.”
Raglin and Wasike led the Cardinal women on the track while Emmonnie Henderson and Leon led the women in the field events. Raglin won the 60 meter prelim with a time of 7.59 before coming back and winning the finals with a season best time of 7.51. Wasike won the 3,000 meter run with a time of 9:43.82.
Henderson won her second straight shot put event. She won with a season best throw of 16.78m/55’3/4″. Leon won the pole vault, clearing a season best of 3.97m/13’1/4″ for the win.
“Freshman Donald McClinton stood out today for the men’s squad with a huge win in the long jump and then a runner-up finish in the 60 meter dash,” said Cowper. “Our men’s group has showed promise on the track and in the field events at different times this season. As we progress, we need to see all event areas clicking at the same competition.”
McClinton won the long jump with a collegiate best mark of 7.52m/24’81/4″. The freshman also recorded a second place finish in the 60 meter dash with a season best time of 6.83.
Other highlights on the day were second place finishes in the weight throw from Henderson with a throw of 19.50m/ 63′ 11¾”. Alexis Gibbons finished second in the long jump with a season best mark of 6.08m/19’111/2″. On the men’s side, the 4×400 meter relay team of Carlos Coleman, Josh Hall, Joe Delgado, and Langston Love finished second with a time of 3:15.36. Marcus Jegede finished second in the long jump with a career best mark of 7.41m/24′ 33/4″. Christian Buckley finished second in the shot put with a season best throw of 16.64m/57′ 71/4″.
The Cardinals had six athletes with third place finishes. Devin Valentine finished third in the triple jump with a mark of 14.56m/47’91/4″. Spencer Harris finished third in the weight throw with a season best toss of 16.75m/ 54′ 11½”.
On the women’s side, Morgan Zacharias and Jade Hawkins finished third in the pole vault with season best marks of 3.82m/12’61/4″. Freshman Makenli Forrest finished third in the weight throw with a career best mark of 18.86m/ 61′ 10½” while Veronika Karpenko finished third in the triple jump with a mark of 11.77m/38’71/2″.
Louisville will be back in action on Jan. 27, at the Illini Classic in Champaign, Ill.
