L&N Federal Credit Union Commits $2 Million to Cardinal Athletics

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — L&N Federal Credit Union, a cooperative, not-for-profit financial institution located in Louisville, has committed $2 million to University of Louisville Athletics that will help fund upcoming projects for the Cardinals.

In recognition of their gift, UofL’s campus venue Cardinal Arena has been renamed L&N Federal Credit Union Arena.  Opened in 1991 and renovated in 2017, the 1,100-seat facility is located at the corner of Floyd Street and Brandeis Avenue and is connected to the northeast corner of the Swain Student Activities Center.  It houses the offices, training and competition facilities for the Cardinals’ women’s volleyball team.

“L&N Federal Credit Union is proud to support University of Louisville Athletics,” said Chris Brown, President/CEO of L&N Federal Credit Union.  “We believe in Vince Tyra’s vision to enhance the student athlete experience for all 23 sports.  We want to do our part to make it happen.  We are also excited to make L&N Federal Credit Union Arena the new home of Louisville Volleyball.  It is a privilege to be associated with such a great program.  In a short amount of time, Dani Busboom-Kelly and her teams have had great success and we are looking forward to being a part of this program’s future!”

“We are incredibly appreciative of L&N Federal Credit Union’s support, along with Chris Brownand his team’s personal support and involvement with fostering the mission of creating a terrific student-athlete experience at UofL,” said Vince Tyra, UofL Vice-President and Director of Athletics. “Their mission and values closely align with ours and their ongoing financial support is a sure sign of their belief that we are on the right track.”

The gift will go toward the Cardinals’ “Next Step Fund,” which will provide resources for future improvements with UofL’s student-athlete experience and capital projects.

A homecoming of sorts, the railroad that passes through that area on campus was the original L&N Railroad.  On the exact spot where Cardinal Stadium, UofL’s football venue, now sits is where L&N Railroad’s South Louisville Shops were located for approximately 90 years.

Established in 1954, the credit union was founded to serve the L&N Railroad workers in Louisville. In 1982, the credit union converted to a Multi-Group Charter and went on to serve various businesses throughout Kentucky, Southern Indiana, and Tennessee. In 2004, the credit union changed to a Community Charter.
