Louisville Football Gets Another SEC Transfer In Mississippi LB Mohamed Sanogo

Louisville Football has tapped the transfer portal again and found another SEC transfer. Linebacker Mohamed Sanogo, a grad transfer from the University of Mississippi, committed to the Cards this evening. A former member of the Class of 2017, Sanogo has a wealth of experience in the top football conference in the nation and will be bringing that to UofL. Sanogo is the second transfer UofL has gotten from the transfer portal after the previous commitment of Tennessee transfer Tiyon Evans.

Out of high school, the 6’2 236 lbs Texas native was the 398th overall player in the nation per 247sports. He was a 3 Star prospect that chose the Rebels over Baylor, Mississippi State, Indiana, and UCLA.

During Sanogo’s career at Mississippi, he was a very productive linebacker that did miss some time due to an injury in 2019. He recorded 210 total tackles, 12 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks, 2 forced fumbles, and 4 passes defensed over his entire career there. His most productive single season was 2018 when he had 112 total tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss, 1 sack, 1 pass defensed, and 2 forced fumbles. This season, including playing in a game against UofL, Sanogo recorded 26 total tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, and 1.5 sacks.

Sanogo is a heady player that is a tackling machine when he’s at his best. He can be a true run-stopper for the defense as he’s able to shoot gaps and make tackles for short gains or losses. Coverage is something he excels at as well, able to play tight coverage and break up passes or make tackles so a running back or tight end can’t get yards after the catch. Sanogo is very smart and is in prime position more often than not. He’s very good at pursuing down the line on stretch runs and has good sideline-to-sideline speed. As a tackler, he’s pretty elite. He’s a very good form tackler and can still hammer opponents even when form tackling.

As CJ Avery moves on due to exhausting his eligibility, it’s great the coaching staff dipped into the portal and found a talent such as Mohamed Sanogo to fill the void. He will likely line up as an inside linebacker next to Monty Montgomery. Sanogo has performed at a high level in the best football conference in the land. I would bet Sanogo will be one of the top tacklers, if not the top tackler, for UofL football in the 2022 season.
