Monday at ACC media day, Bobby Petrino did about 40 interviews. Obviously, a lot of those were just saying the same things over and over…and over. But some things stuck out that he said, of course. One of those was when he was discussing the backup QB job. Will Gardner has not been officially named the starting quarterback, but all signs point to that being the case. Petrino did say that if the season started now, he would be the starter.
During the spring, Kyle Bolin and Brett Nelson were battling for the backup spot. Neither could really separate from the other. It was learned Monday that Bolin actually injured his knee this off-season and it required surgery. Bolin’s dad told Jeff Greer of the Courier Journal that Kyle tore the meniscus in his right knee. If you remember, he tore his ACL in his left knee during his senior year of high school. He is expected to be 100% when preseason camp starts.
Here are the main points that Petrino made…
*When asked about the status of Sharieff Rhaheed-Muhammad, Petrino said “Well we’re well aware of it. It’s something that was shocking and concerning. But you have to let the court system play out. And it’s one of those things where you don’t make a decision until you have to.”
*About DeVante Parker: “Yeah he’s really impressive. He puts a smile on my face. And the thoughts of how we can use him and utilize him and get him the ball…I think he can run all the routes. He does a great job getting in and out of his breaks. He can catch the ball away from his body. He works hard and he’s been very coach-able. That was something that I was very happy to see. Obviously we know he can elevate and go up and catch the ball when it’s high in the air. He should have a great year for us. He needs to learn and get better just like everybody else.”
Here is the official press release from UofL about Teddy Bridgewater declaring for the 2014 NFL Draft. We posted earlier this afternoon that he was doing that, but this includes quotes from Teddy.
LOUISVILLE, Ky.– University of Louisville junior quarterback Teddy Bridgewater has decided to forgo his final year of collegiate eligibility, and make himself available for the 2014 NFL Draft.
In our first position breakdown for the 2013 football season, we will take a look at the Quarterback position for the Louisville Cardinals. I thought about just putting a picture of Teddy and that would be the whole post. But since you are taking the time to check out the site (appreciated by the way), I will return the favor by giving just a little bit more information than just that. And no, I would not have really just put a picture for this post.

When National Signing Day comes in February, there are always some players you wonder about. Will they really sign? What’s the hold up? Will they make it to campus? Well, we for sure don’t have to worry about that for 3 Cardinals for the class of 2013.

*Charlie Strong picked up 2 committments today for the class of 2013. Richard Benjamin, a WR/DB that will likely play cornerback for the Cards, has offers from nearly every major program in the country. Read our earlier post here. Benjamin actually committed to the Cards a few days ago, but since he was making his official visit this weekend, the coaches wanted to wait until then for it to become official, and now it is.

We have already seen the committment of Richard Benjamin become official, and now the Cards have another one today! Junior College quarterback Brett Nelson (6’4 230 lbs) of Southwestern Community College in California has verbally committed to the Cards for next season.

The Cards have recently inquired about 6’3 230 lbs JUCO QB Brett Nelson. Nelson completed 64% of his passes this year and threw for an average of 257 yards per game. Nelson would be a nice pickup for the Cards as he would provide much needed experience should Teddy go pro like many expect after next season. Gardner and Bolin will also be in the hunt for the next QB job at Louisville but with both coming off injures an extra QB would be nice. Nelson has also been hearing from Alabama.
