55 (Episode 10)

55-10

This week…..on 55…..

The tenth episode of 55. Oh how time flies. It seems like it was just yesterday that you were nothing more than just an idea in my head. I just can’t believe how fast you have grown. Before long we will celebrate your 21st. I can’t talk about this right now. Sorry. Moving on. I know what you are saying…Jeremy has finally lost it, or dude it’s just a story. You would be right either way. I am just glad that this week it was not as eventful as last week and that I will be able to take time out to make fun of Shawn once again….I feel like I neglected him. Poor lil guy. Well here we go. Once again, I share with you the 55 most ridiculous things I have heard, had to debate, or just thought about this past week. This …..is….55

1) Mark Schlabach has once again released his “Way too early Top 25″ for college football this upcoming season. Check out where he ranks the Cards here

2) He also ranked Texas…..there goes his credibility with me

3) Sorry Charlie

4) Still a little salty………

5) Saturday Preston Brown & Hakeem Smith played in the East-West Shrine game. Both played well but evidently nobody cared enough to post tackling stats on any site anywhere….

6) nobody cares

7) Oh great SpongeBob is back…..anyways

8)  The University of Louisville has purchased the Cardinal Club, an 18-hole championship golf course and 212-acre complex in Simpsonville, Ky. which serves as home to the U of L men’s and women’s golf teams.  The facility will be rebranded as the University of Louisville Golf Club

9) It really was long overdue….great purchase by the University

10) Louisville midfielder Charlyn Corral was selected to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Scholar All-America Team the NSCAA announced on Wednesday

11) Sources tell me…..Shawn wears Underroos……Finally a Shawn joke!!!!!!!

12) Sorry bud…I felt I had neglected you. Moving forward

East-West Shrine Game will include two Cardinals

East-West Shrine Game

On Saturday January 18, 2014, the 89th East-West Shrine Game will take place in St. Petersburg, Florida at Tropicana Field. That is fitting because two former Louisville Cardinals who played their first bowl game on that very field will take part in this game for the East: Hakeem Smith and Preston Brown.

Hakeem

Hakeem Smith finished his career at Louisville with 290 total tackles, 4 interceptions, 22 pass deflections, 5 forced fumbles, and 2 sacks. He played in every single game from 2010-2013 for the Cards.

Preston Brown

Preston Brown finished his career with 301 total tackles, 7 sacks, 3 forced fumbles, and 1 interception. He also played in every single game from 2010-2013.

The game can be seen on the NFL Network and it starts at 4:00 p.m. ET.

These Seniors deserve a packed PJCS on Saturday

PJCS

I began to type this post, and had to delete the first paragraph and start over. I was opening the post with negativity and talking about what I expect the stadium to be like on Saturday afternoon. But that will do no good and make no difference. No need to be negative. I will just talk about why Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium should be FULL on Saturday afternoon.

And let me go ahead and get these excuses out on the table for everyone (all of these are in a whiny voice):

Sights And Sounds: Rutgers

53-IMG_0714

Thursday night our University of Louisville Cardinals defeated the Scarlet Knights from Rutgers 24-10 in what will likely be the last meeting ever between the two schools. Say what you may about Rutgers and how bad of a football team they were 10 years ago but they really had stepped up to play the part of conference rival since we got into the Big East/AAC. Teddy Bridgewater went 21-31 for 310 yards and 2 TD while throwing a very rare INT, only his second of the season. Senorise Perry added to the offensive attack with 13 rushes for 104 yards and 1 TD with his longest rush for 42 yards. Louisville’s Defense come up huge with 8 sacks and forced Rutgers QB Gary Nova to be….Gary Nova as he threw 4 INT’s. Calvin Pryor III led the Defense with 14 total tackles. Below are some videos and pictures we got from the game, enjoy!

Go Cards!

Today we continue the position breakdowns for the 2013 football season and focus on the Safeties!

Hakeem Smith

Hakeem

Senior

6’1   179 lbs

If it feels like Hakeem Smith has been at UofL forever, well he pretty much has! He got here in 2009 and red-shirted. As a freshman in 2010, Smith did not start against UK in the first game of the season. He has started EVERY GAME SINCE! Yes, that is correct. He started the rest of the season as a freshman, and then started every game during his sophomore and junior seasons. This has led to Smith being a three-time All-Big East Selection! He was also named Big East Newcomer of the Year in 2010.

Football: Big East Postseason Honors

NCAA Football: Louisville at West Virginia

You don’t go 10-2 and make it to the Sugar Bowl without some great individual performances, and those were recognized by the Big East with their posteason honors. Teddy Bridgewater was named Offensive Player of the Year, and Charlie Strong was Coach of the Year, but the Cards has more players honored…

2011 UofL-UK Highlight Video!

2011

Found this video on youtube from user Mshultsy. If it doesn’t get you pumped up for the game, I am not sure what will!

Rob Jones: My Governor’s Cup Prediction

Cardinal Sports Zone is happy to have Rob Jones contribute to the site! Our hope is to have a weekly write-up from Rob during the 2012 Football Season. Rob used to manage the local 1450 AM sports radio station as well as it’s website, so the man knows what he is talking about! What better way for him to jump into this than to give his thoughts on the UofL-UK game! Check it out…

Justin Renck: My Governor’s Cup prediction

I have had the countdown to 3:30 pm on September 2nd in my phone for months now. There is excitement on so many levels. UofL football is starting, we play UK first, and I am finally back in Louisville full-time after being in Auburn for the last 4 years (which when it comes to football season, I can’t complain about being down there!).

I bought season tickets in the upper level when they built the expansion for the 2010 season. I was still in Auburn for another couple of years, and I only made it to about 4 games in the past 2 years, but I knew I was purchasing them for when I got back because we would be back to being good again and I didn’t want to be on a wait list. That time has come, and it worked out perfectly.

Now, about this game…
