Rick Pitino announced at his press conference today that he will coach the Puerto Rico national basketball team this coming summer in two international events. They will play in the Pan American Games in Toronto July 21-25. They will also participate in a 10-team pre-Olympic FIBA qualifying tournament August 25-September 5 in Monterray, Mexico.
This news also impacts the current Louisville basketball team. Rather than travel to Spain this summer as originally planned, the team will now travel to the Bahamas to play against the Puerto Rico National Team as well as their junior team.
In all, Louisville will play 5 or 6 games in the Bahamas against Puerto Rico national teams. Pitino will coach for Puerto Rico and the assistants will coach Louisville. Mike Balado will be Pitino’s assistant coach for Puerto Rico this summer. That should be a great experience for what will be a very young team for the Cards.
