Countdown to Kickoff: 2018 vs WKU

Louisville Football faced this year’s opening night foe WKU two years ago. The horrendous 2018 season that led to the firing of Bobby Petrino and a Renaissance of the football program under Scott Satterfield.

It was the third game of the season. The first was a shellacking by Alabama. The second was an uninspiring performance in a 31-7 win over FCS Indiana State. Many thought this WKU game would be where UofL got their act together and got on a roll. The Cards did get on a roll, but not the kind they wanted.

The Cards eeked out a 20-17 win. WKU had a chance to tie the game late, but missed a field goal. While the game was not necessarily memorable, Micale Cunningham did show off his running ability with 129 yards. Dae Williams also ran for 58 yards and the only 2 TDs of the game for the Cards.

After this game, the Cards rolled right over the cliff to a 2-10 season. It was one of the worst seasons in recent memory, arguably worse than the Kragthorpe years. However, this WKU game did show that Micale Cunningham could be the QB of the future. He got to showcase himself a bit and now he leads the 2020 Cards into what many believe will be one of the best seasons in recent memory.
