Louisville MBB Recap: Louisville Routs Jackson State 106–70 Behind Balanced Attack

By Louisville Men’s Basketball Beat Writer Taylor Kopp

Louisville flexed its depth and offensive firepower Thursday night, rolling past Jackson State 106–70 at the KFC Yum! Center. The Cardinals shot a blistering 52-percent from the field and turned a tight early stretch into a blowout with relentless ball movement and dominance on the glass. Ryan Conwell led the way with 19 points and eight rebounds, while Mikel Brown Jr. orchestrated the offense masterfully, finishing with 18 points and nine assists. Louisville’s size and tempo proved too much, out-rebounding the Tigers 49–29 and outscoring them 26–9 at the free-throw line.

Jackson State actually opened with some early confidence, taking a brief 4–3 lead just two minutes into the game. However, that would be the Tigers’ only advantage of the night. Louisville responded with a 12–0 run midway through the first half and never looked back. Sophomore forward Khani Rooths delivered an impressive double-double with 16 points and 10 boards, while Sananda Fru added 12 points on 6-of-8 shooting off efficient cuts to the rim. The Cardinals shared the ball freely, racking up 24 assists to Jackson State’s 10, and looked comfortable spreading the floor even when the bench units entered late.

For Jackson State, guard Daeshun Ruffin did his best to keep the Tigers competitive, scoring a team-high 22 points on 8-of-20 shooting while hitting three triples. Jaylen Mitchell Jr. poured in 20 points on 8-of-10 from the field, and Demetrius McMillian added 18 with four made threes. Beyond that trio, production was scarce for Jackson State. The Tigers struggled to establish any inside presence, recording just seven offensive rebounds and shooting only 56-percent from the free throw line.

Louisville’s 106 points marked its highest total of the young season and a showcase of what this team can do when its offense clicks. The Cardinals’ ball movement, rebounding, and balanced scoring underscored the progress head coach Pat Kelsey has been preaching. If they can bottle up this combination of effort and execution, the Cards could turn some heads Tuesday night as they take on their arch rival Kentucky Wildcats for The Battle of the Bluegrass.
