Category Archives: Cards in the NBA
Today was one of the hardest days in Louisville Athletics history. The decision to place Rick Pitino and Tom Jurich on leave, has not come without much backlash. Nobody is hurting more right than the current players, but the former players are not far behind. Here is what some of the former and current cards have come forward to say.
Some of the current and former players of the University of Louisville Men’s Basketball team, have come forward to show the world what Rick Pitino meant to them.
"Let your family and close friends be the judge of who you are as a person, don't worry about being judged by others who don't know you because your family and close friends know what you are all about"- Rick Pitino.. I will always respect what you have done for me, and you will for ever be my coach! ✊🏽✊🏽
Words can't describe the love and respect I have for my coach. This is a terrible day for me, card nation and everyone else close to the Pitino family. I just heard the news and it breaks my heart. This man taught me a lot of life lessons and helped me to become a better player and man. I will always stand by my coach. Now for the players affected by this that had nothing to do with it keep your heads held high this to shall pass. To the fans sorry you all had to endure the negativity surrounding our University that you all love and respect.
Rick Pitino has never been shy to share his opinions on the one and done rule that the NCAA and NBA have put in place. It is just not for him. But Coach Pitino has met with Marty Smith with ESPN and mentions that he believes the one and done will be a thing of the past within the next two years. You can see the full interview below.
The celebrity guest picker for today’s ESPN College Gameday is the University of Louisville’s men’s basketball coach, Rick Pitino!
The University of Louisville Men’s Basketball team has scheduled their very first Pro Day for October 7th as reported by Evan Daniels with Scout.com. It will be divided up into two practices and head coach Rick Pitino has already said they will be extremely athletic practices. He also believes he has 5 or 6 legitimate first round picks coming off this year’s team. The Cards are ranked 6th heading into the season by CBS Sports.
University of Louisville student-athletes will be loading a semi-truck full of Louisville athletic apparel to aid the victims of Hurricane Harvey on Tuesday at 9 a.m. at the Kentucky Exposition Center. Here at Cardinal Sports Zone, our thoughts and prayers are still with everyone who has been impacted by Hurricane Harvey.
It was announced today that Donovan Mitchell will be at the UofL Bookstore signing autographs on September 16th. The exact time should be announced in the coming days!
Russ Smith had an incredible season this summer in China. He averaged 61.2 points, while adjusting to the rougher style of play. Now he has signed to play in China’s highest league, but his ultimate goal has not changed. He still wants to end up in the NBA. Dennis Chambers with Basketball Insiders sat down with Russ Smith to talk about how life is going.
It is no secret that the Chicago Bulls are not going to be very good this season. They may actually compete for the worst team in the NBA. Russ Smith on the other hand is coming off a mega season over in China. Ya know, that one where he was averaging 61.9 points a game. Bryce Fields with Real Ball Insiders, wrote about why the Bulls picking up Russ would be a win-win.
Ps. Most of them are reasons UofL fans have been screaming at scouts since our beloved Russ graduated.
Rick Pitino announced today that the University of Louisville Men’s Basketball program will hold its first NBA Pro Day this fall. While a date is still up in the air, Pitino does expect to have all 30 NBA teams represented at the workout. With Adel, Spalding and Mahmoud all being on the draft radar currently, and King, Bowen and Williams expecting to get attention quickly into the season, it makes perfect sense. The Cardinals are projected to have the number 1 schedule again this year and Pitino feels this will give the young Cards an opportunity to get used to that pressure.

Russ Smith is currently playing in China, averaging 57.7 points per game. Let me say that again, Russ Smith is averaging 57.7 points per game in China. At one point this year, he was averaging 61.2. That is just flat out Russdiculous. Yet somehow, the NBA scouts aren’t taking much notice. Russ sat down with YARON WEITZMAN of Bleacher Report and talked about the rollercoaster he has been on since he graduated from the University of Louisville. You can read the full article below, and let us know when you think Russ will finally get the respect he deserves.
This morning, the Los Angeles Clippers and Houston Rockets negotiated a blockbuster trade that sent super star point guard Chris Paul to the Rockets. Originally reported, in return the Clippers received the Rockets’ 2018 1st round pick, Sam Dekker, Patrick Beverley and Lou Williams. But it is also apparent that power forward, and former Louisville Cardinal Montrezl Harrell was also included in the trade package.
Depending on the status of whether or not Blake Griffin decides to resign with LA, this could potentially mean an increase in minutes for Harrell, as he rarely saw the floor in Houston’s 2017 postseason. Harrell became a fan favorite while at Louisville due the frequency of his ferocious and high flying dunks, and was also a part of the 2013 National Championship team.
Even as he was on the west coast preparing for the upcoming NBA Draft, former Louisville guard Donovan Mitchell was still able to find the time to sit down for an interview with myself on behalf of Cardinal Sports Zone, and talk about the draft as well as his time at Louisville.
Matt McGavic: Thank you for doing this interview, it’s a pleasure to get to talk to you even with your busy schedule. First of all, how excited are you to take the next step in your career?
Donovan Mitchell: I’m very excited. It’s definitely tough to make it to draft day, and I wouldn’t be there without what Louisville’s done for me, and being in that environment is awesome. I’m excited, I feel like I’m ready. I came out here to L.A. and started performing well, and I just feel like I’m ready to do this, ready just to be a pro and play against pros and take that next step.
Jeff Greer of the Louisville Courier Journal is reporting that Damion Lee has signed a training camp deal with the Boston Celtics.
An article published by The Sporting News in June of 2015, talked about Louisville players in the NBA and the lack of staying power despite collegiate success. The article says “Terrence Williams, Samardo Samuels and Chris Smith had their shots. Peyton Siva, the point guard on that championship team, is stuck in the NBA Development League. Francisco Garcia, Pitino’s most successful NBA product, who played 10 years in the league, was waived by the Rockets this season. Of Pitino’s drafted players, three remain in the league: Gorgui Dieng in Minnesota, Russ Smith in Memphis and Earl Clark in Brooklyn. The latter two played a combined 158 minutes last season, while Dieng was a solid role player and occasional starter for the Timberwolves” The article was published prior to the 2015 NBA draft and it wasn’t trying to belittle Louisville but rather it was saying that Montrezl Harrell and Terry Rozier are the type of players that have staying power in the NBA and they are (as the title of the article states) hoping to rebuild the path to the NBA for Louisville players. On Wednesday, May 25th, Louisville Center Chinanu Onuaku will have to decide if he will remain in this years NBA draft or if he will return to Louisville for his junior season. Everyone has an opinion on his future and I am no different. When I stared as a contributor for Cardinal Sports Zone I said I would always keep it real. I intend to keep it real as I give you my opinion of Onuaku’s future. It’s hard as a fan to remove our selfish desires and look at the whole picture but I intend to do my best. As a Celtics fan there is nothing more I love than finally drafting a Louisville guy. For years it was uk guy after uk guy after uk guy. You get the picture. It was June 24th, 2015 and I was at my parents house for our weekly family dinner. I rushed to the living room to see when we picked. The names on the best 10 available were Montrezl and another PF that I believe was from Cal. The pick came in. I had just listened to reports that said: Terry Rozier has fallen deep into the second round. So it was a shock to me not because of his talent but because of the experts. We selected Terry Rozier with the 16th pick of the NBA Draft. It finally happened.
The next day came and the Celtics were the most criticized team from the draft. Bleacher Report slammed and criticized the move. You could tell this wasn’t going to be an easy road. I knew if anyone was going to make it though it would be Rozier. His story that we heard before he came here let me know he was built tough. He had a rough road so far this season. He was sent to the D-league multiple times this year. Many people would have given up. Not Terry Rozier. We are heading towards the playoffs and who is finally starting to make waves? You guessed it: Terry Rozier. You have to be able to maximize on opportunities. When Jae Crowder went down with an ankle injury, Terry came in and made a difference. I know what you are saying if you don’t follow him closely. Wow! he must be scoring a ton of points! That’s the surprising part though. Terry is making a name for himself doing the other thing he did well at Louisville, rebounding. I will be watching the rest of the year wishing for nothing but the best for the Celtics and my Cardinal Forever as well. I am glad he is finally showing the world what I knew all along. This kid can play!

- I met Montrezl Harrell this past Sunday at Griffs. The man is enormous and that is coming from an enormous man himself. No doubt that he will succeed and was so kind to take a picture with my wife. She was pumped. there could not have been any better news for me than running into him there.
This week on 55…..
Clemson, Clemson, Clemson. The time-out. How did our other programs do? Gary Barnidge, the Player??? We look this week at the remainder of the Football schedule and I will give my predictions and much, much more. So sit down, buckle up and enjoy the ride. These are the 55 most intriguing, ridiculous or down right best or worst things I have heard this week. This…is….55
2) Out of respect for you I post your flag first this week. I was confident all week that with our defense we would have no problem defeated Clemson at Death Valley. I was wrong. The Cards lost 23-17 after a huge James Quick reception set us up with a 1 and 10 from the 5 yard line or so. Then this happened.
4) Well we lost and we should be very proud of this team. Without Will for the first half and with out Devante all game we almost pulled it off. Our Defense smothered the Tigers and held them to 9 offensive points when they scored 91 the prior 2 weeks combined.
5) Also for everyone ready to throw Bobby into the fire might I remind you of two things. One, Bobby has not been around these kids long. It does take a while to mesh with your team and get used to what they can do. Two we could have been kragthorped again. Be very thankful.
6) Always remember
8) Yeah….It’s not that bad now, is it? IS IT!!!!!
9) I digress
10) Let’s talk Defense. James Sample had 14 tackles and an INT, James Burgess had 11 tackles and an INT. Leading tackler on the season keith Kelsey added 8. The defense remains the #1 overall in total Defense.
