Cards Hold Off The Hoos 71-56

Louisville Women’s basketball team came home to face off with a (7-11) University of Virginia team, who lost to Virginia Tech 69-61 their last time out. The Cards would attempt to secure win number 350 in Coach Walz career. Cards lead the all time series 9-2. Louisville shot 48.3% in the last outing, a win that came in Chapel Hill 74-67.

Louisville started; Dana Evans (19.1ppg, 4.3apg), Jazmine Jones (14.5ppg, 5.1rpg, 3.6apg), Elizabeth Balogun (8.7ppg, 4.5rpg), Bionca Dunham (5.3ppg, 5.7rpg) and Kylee Shook (9.0ppg, 7.6rpg).
Kylee Shook got the Cards started off quickly, as she scored the first 5 points for UofL. Cards were able to jump out to a 9-2 start on a Dana Evans 3 ball. Jazmine and Elizabeth Dixon both picked up 2 fouls each in the 1st quarter. Cards offense looked sharp early as they shoot 71.4% to end the 1st quarter. Dana Evans and Kylee Shook led the Cards, as they outscored Virginia by themselves with 9 and 8 points respectively. Cards ended the quarter on 12-2 run, 25-13.

Cards go on a 10-2 run to start the 2nd quarter and opened up it’s biggest lead of the half 35-15. Cards shooting cooled off a little, but the defense picked up as the Cards held Virginia to 4 points for over half of the quarter. The quarter ended with Louisville on top 39-22.

Cards start off the 2nd half scoring with a lob play for Jones’ first bucket of the game. Despite the early bucket by the Cards, UVA outscored the Cards 8-4 (8-0 run) in the first 5 minutes of the half forcing coach Walz to call a timeout. Mykasa Robinson goes 1/2 at the free throw line and snapped the 8-0 UVA run, and gave UofL it’s first points in over 3 minutes. UVA was clearly the more aggressive team coming out of intermission and forced a lot of Louisville turnovers (5) and fouls, but could only cut the lead to 10. Jazmine Jones and the Cards were able to withstand the UVA run, with a run of their own and ended the quarter with a 12 point lead (51-39)

UVA started the fourth quarter on a mission. UVA cut they lead to 10, but the Cards didn’t allow them to get any closer. Jazmine Jones continued her strong 2nd half as she and Evans were crucial in pushing the lead up to 20 (biggest lead of the game). UVA continued to fight as things got a little chippy with the Virginia players, Cards kept their composure and walked away with their 11th straight (8-0 in ACC) win 71-56.

Cards shot 43.9% from the field and held UVA to 36.2% from the field, including 33.3% (6-18) from beyond the arc and 75% from the free throw line. Louisville had 13 assists on 25 mad field goals, 9 steals and 7 block shots. The Cards outrebounded UVA 40-33, UVA’s benched outscored Louisville’s bench 23-12. UofL was led in scoring by Dana Evans with 21 points, Jazmine Jones (13) and Kylee Shook (10). Elizabeth Balogun led all players with 12 rebounds, Kylee and Dana chipped in with seven and six rebounds respectively. Kylee Shook led all players with six block shots.

Next up for the Cards is another home ACC game with Pittsburgh at 4pm (Girl Scouts Day).
