Donovan Mitchell is having an outstanding rookie season with the Utah Jazz. He has broken records, had insane dunks and done it all while taking control of the Jazz offense. Colin Ward-Henninger with CBS Sports now has Donovan at the top of the rookie power rankings. Right where he belongs.
Rick Pitino once said that when the time came it was time for him to move on from UofL, he would walk away quietly. With no surprise, that doesn’t seem to be the case. He has now came out and said that he didn’t feel he had support anymore at UofL and that Papa John’s comments hurt his feelings.
What would Sutton be doing if he didn’t play basketball? Who is the most serious of all his teammates? What is his comfort food? We the fans get the answer to these questions and more on today’s Beat the Buzzer thanks to UofL Athletics.
Deng Adel, VJ King, Jordan Nwora and David Padgett met with the media after Sunday’s loss to Seton Hall. Hear what they had to say below.

Now that it is December, we have found our first Grinch of the holiday season. His name is Kevin Willard. Willard was an assistant to He Who Shall Not Be Named (Pitino) from 2001-2007 and even recruited David Padgett. While he compliments how well David has handled everything the past few months, he also mentions that he has no emotional attachment to UofL since Pitino and Jurich are both gone. We also can’t fully blame him, he has been gone for a while. Either way, Sunday should be fun when Seaton Hall visits the Yum! Center at 4.
Today, former head coach Rick Pitino announced he will be suing the University of Louisville athletic association for a breach of contract. He is looking for over $35 Million. In a statement released through his lawyer he is claiming his contract was breached when he was suspended and ultimately fired. Jeff Greer with the Courier Journal helps break it down below.
UofL athletics sat down with VJ King to find out a little more about the sophomore. What is the best advice he has ever received? Who is his celebrity crush? What would he name his Derby horse? Find out the answer to these and so much more below!
Press release from the University of Louisville athletic department:
Toy Collection Planned for Dec. 11 Men’s Basketball Game
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — New toys will be collected and subsequently donated to Norton’s Children’s Hospital prior to the Cardinals’ Dec. 11 men’s basketball game against Bryant. New toys for any age or gender will be collected at the entrance of the KFC Yum! Center. A group of the toys will also be provided to the Home of the Innocents and Wesley House.
Adidas has come forward and asked a judge to dismiss Pitino’s case against the company. They have no new evidence, but they stand by the original findings and say that Pitino knew fully of the exchange of money to Brian Bowen’s family. It seems this is just the beginning of a very long, and ugly, battle.
In the latest chapter of the Katina Powell saga, UofL has filed its official appeal against the NCAA Committee of Infractions ruling from June. The Courier Journal received these files through a public records request. UofL deems the ruling excessive especially since none of the players on the 2011-2012 and 2012-2013 teams received the “benefits” Katina Powell claimed.
Once again, the Cardinals fall one spot in this week’s AP poll. Duke continues to hold onto the top spot with Arizona and Kansas rounding out the top 3. Any surprises to you in this week’s poll?
Donovan Spida Mitchell. He is one of the most beloved cardinals to wear the uniform in recent years, and rightfully so. He has been off to a great start in his professional career and just recently came through with a promise he made to his mom to buy her a new car. Andrew Sharp with Sports Illustrated ranks the top 15 in the rookie class based on the first month’s performance, and Donovan is getting the recognition he deserves.
The UofL athletic department sat down with UofL transfer, Steven Enoch on this week’s Beat the Buzzer. He talks about the best advice he has ever received, who is the most serious among his teammates and what his Kentucky Derby horse would be named, along with so much more!
When Quentin Snider, Anas Mahmoud and Deng Adel committed to play basketball at the University of Louisville, they never could have guessed the obstacles they would be facing. They have played through the Katina Powell scandal and now the FBI one. They never let it bring them down though, they have been the solid foundation that the freshman and sophomores have needed. Jeff Borzello with ESPN.COM talks about how vital the upperclassman have been.
Jeff Greer with the Courier Journal recently sat down with interim head coach, David Padgett for 30 minutes, and got the inside scoop on how he is adjusting. They talked about everything from recruiting to adjusting to the size of his new office (hint, it is huge).
It was announced today that Deng Adel has been named to the preseason top 50 candidate list for the Wooden Award. The Wooden award is the most prestigious individual honor in college basketball. Congrats to Adel!
Pat Forde with Yahoo Sports noticed how quiet the Yum! Center seemed on Sunday. Between a smaller crowd than usual, a smaller student section, and a much quieter coach, the entire day felt different. Different doesn’t always mean bad, but only time will tell on how it plays out.
Now that all of the exhibition games are complete, it is time to focus on the first official game of the 2017-2018 men’s basketball season. The Student CAF announced today all of the promotions for the season, including a pajama night, ugly sweater night and a neon night. Check out the full schedule below!
On September 26, 2017, the day started off just like any other day. Most of us went to work, student athletes and students attended classes, naps were taken, never would anyone have guessed the landscape of college basketball would be potentially changed forever that day.
Jeff Greer with the Courier Journal sat down with some of the current players on the UofL men’s basketball team and asked them how they all found out about the FBI investigation. Anas was leaving a finance class, Quentin was taking a nap, VJ and Ryan were in a biology lab, everyone was going about their normal, every day business when a tsunami hit.
While everyone had the same initial reaction of shock and disbelief, it is the way Q, Anas and Adel stepped up to make sure the team did not fall apart. Their true leadership skills shined like never before in some of the toughest days of being a cardinal.
