Late Saturday Night it was announced that ACC 2018 Coach of Year Holly Aprile from Pittsburgh would be the next softball coach for the Louisville Cardinals. Then, on Sunday morning University of Pittsburgh announced that she would be leaving. She spent the past 11 years at Pittsburgh as head coach before that she was an assistant coach at Pittsburgh & South Carolina. Holly helped guide the Panthers to a 33-18-1 record on the season & 238 Career Victories. This is a huge and great replacement for the retirement of long time Coach Sandy Pearsall.
On Tuesday, the ACC announced all conference teams for Softball which included 3 Cardinals. Sidney Melton & Megan Hensley was named to the first team all conference. Freshman Maddy Newman was named to the All Freshman Team. Congrats to these ladies on excellent season.
The Cards will take on Syracuse at 1pm Wednesday in the ACC Tournament in Atlanta.
On Wednesday afternoon, the Cardinals played the Thundering Herd of Marshall University. This was the final home game of the season. The Cards jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 1st inning with a single by senior Jena Jordan. Nicole Pufahl helped lead the charge in the bottom of the 3rd plating 2 runs & scoring on an error. The Cards led 4-0.
Marshall led up the top of the 4th with a solo home run. Sidney Melton scored Allison Szydlowski in the fourth inning. She was able to scored on an error to make it 6-1. The Thundering Herd stormed back in the top of 5th scoring 9 runs leading 10-6 going into the bottom of the 5th.
On Tuesday, Junior Pitcher Megan Hensley was announced as NFCA (National Fastpitch Coaches Association) & USA Softball Collegiate National Player of The Week. She also picked up ACC Pitcher of the week. Hensley pitched all three contests against Boston College only allowing 3 runs and striking out 7 batters.
Meagan was hitting .500 average & hitting 3 home runs. She is the first athlete from Louisville since Katie Keller in 2014 to win the National Player of the Week. Then, on Wednesday Hensley was named ESPNW Player of the Week.
The Cards made the travel up to Bloomington, Indiana to take on the Hoosiers. Led by strong pitching and strong bats the Cards were victorious. Nicole Pufahl single in the top 3rd let the Cards jump out to 1-0 lead.
Yesterday, the Cardinals started a 3 game series with Syracuse. They played a double header on Friday to be prepared for strong weather coming in on the East Coast. Here is a recap of each of the games:
Game 1: Cards: 3 Syracuse 2
Junior Megan Hensley provided the Cardinals with the power they needed at bat and pitching. She struck out 8 batters in pitching a complete game. Hensley picked up her 12th win of the season. Megan also connected on a 2 run home run in the 1st inning. The Cards scored 2 in the first and never looked back. Alexa Romero picked up the loss after allowing 3 in 4.2 innings pitched. The Cards pushed across another run in the 5th inning. Syracuse tried to come back scoring two runs in the bottom 5th wasn’t enough to catch the Cards.
This Weekend was a busy weekend for the Louisville Softball team. They hosted their annual Black & Red Classic. They hosted Maryland, UAB, Miami Ohio, & Eastern Illinois. These team continued this hot streak sweeping all their competition. Here is an individual break down of each of the games from this past weekend.
Game #1: vs Maryland: The Cards came into winners of 4 straight. Senior Nicole Pufahl went 2-3 with an RBI. She continued her rampage of hitting. Freshman Danielle Watson picked up her 10th win in pitching a complete game striking out a career high eight. Maryland couldn’t find an answer to Watson’s pitching.

This weekend was a busy weekend for the Cardinals in Orlando, Florida competing in the D9 Citrus Classic. Here is how they fared over the weekend.
Game 1 vs Lehigh:
The offense exploded on the scene for the Cardinals as they won 14-1. Sophomore Caitlin Ferguson went 3-3 with 3 RBIs. Megan Hensley started for the Cards and pitched a solid three innings. Freshman Danielle Watson came in for relief of Hensley and pitched the remaining of the game to pick up the win. This was her 5th win on the season.

This was a busy weekend for the softball team in Raleigh, North Carolina. They competed in the ACC / Big Ten challenge against Northwestern & Ohio State. Here is how they did.
Northwestern Game 1:
This game was a crazy back and forth game. The Cards were down 6-2 with when the comeback led by seniors Jena Jordan & Jamie Soles. Morgan Hensley pitched very well as well. She pitched 7 innings only allowing 3 runs. Caitlin Ferguson was 3-5 at the plate with 2 RBI’s. Jena Jordan hit a three run home run in the top of the 7th to tie the score.
Cards: 7 Northwestern: 6
Northwestern Game 2:
In this game the offense didn’t along until the bottom of the forth. The Cards started with a lead off single by junior Madison Cousineau. Jamie Soles hit a single to score Maddy Newman replaced Madison as a pinch runner. Freshman Danielle Watson pitched a complete game only allowing two runs on three hits gaining her fourth win of the season. Coach Pearsall was very pleased how the team preformed in both games.
Cards: 3 Northwestern: 2
Ohio State Game 1:
This game was very hard defeat for the cards in extra innings. Sophomore Caitlin Ferguson went 3-4 with 2 runs and an RBI. Junior Megan Hensley hit a two run home as well. Danielle Watson pitched 1.2 innings allowing three runs while only striking out one picking up her first loss of the season.
Cards: 5 Buckeyes: 6
Ohio State Game 2:
The offense only produced three hits in a 4-0 defeat against the Buckeyes. Freshman Danielle Watson pitched four innings giving up one run on three hits while picking up her second loss of the game. The Cards had opportunities to gets runs on the board but just pushed them across. Coach Pearsall loved the effort in the first match up with the Buckeyes on Saturday but wasn’t happy with Sunday’s Performance.

Game #1 vs North Florida:
North Florida Ospreys took an early 3-0 lead. Then, Louisville & Senior Nicole Pufhal bats started getting going. Nicole lead the team with 3-3 day with a home run & 2 RBI’s. Also senior Jennifer Soles drove in the go ahead run in top of the 7th to help lead the Cards to victory. Freshman Danielle Watson picked up her second victory in a cardinal uniform. She pitched 5 innings only giving up 1 run and striking out 4 batters. Coach Pearsall loved the team’s enthusiasm to be able to fight back and win.
Cards: 5 North Florida: 4
Game #2 vs North Carolina:
This was an early season test against ACC preseason Coastal Favorite North Carolina. The Cards were led by Allison Szydlowski & Caitlin Ferguson with two hits apiece. The Cards couldn’t capitalize with runners in scoring position. Junior Megan Hensley got her first loss of the season only allowing 2 runs in 4 and a third innings.
Cards: 0 North Carolina: 2
Game #1 vs Illinois:
The Cards had an offensive explosion at the plate in their final game of the Jaclyn Invitational in Orlando, Florida. True Freshman Kyra Snyder led the cards going 4-5 from the plate. She had a double with 3 RBI’s. Danielle Watson picked up her her third win of the season. Coah Pearsall & coaching staff learned a lot about their team over this weekend tournament

Next up: ACC/Big 10 Challenge in Raleigh NC vs Northwestern & Ohio State
University of Louisville Softball started the season with a Friday sweep as they took down Butler University & University of Central Florida. Junior Blaire Bass helped lead the Cards in each of the victories. She went a combine 4-5 in the two games. Junior Megan Hensley & True Freshman Danielle Watson both picked up their first victories. Coach Sandy Pearsall was very happy with the team performance but said the team seemed a little tired at the end of the second game with playing back to back. The Cards take the field again tomorrow in Orlando part of the UCF Friends of Jacklyn Invitational. They will play North Florida at 11am & then ACC foe North Carolina at 4p.
Yesterday, Louisville Softball had 10 players named to All-American Scholar Athlete honors. These players had a GPA that was over a 3.5. The team as a whole was honored as one of the top academic softball teams in the nation.
The 2016 Softball season for The University of Louisville came to a conclusion with a 6-4 loss to BYU in the elimination bracket of the Columbia Regional in the NCAA Tournament. In the double elimination regional, The Cards lost their opening game to Nebraska in heartbreaking fashion as Nebraska hit a walk off single giving them the 3-2 victory. As announced on the NCAA selection show last night on ESPNU, The Louisville Cardinals Softball team has earned an at large bid and will be playing in the Columbia Regional along with the overall 15 seed Missouri, BYU and Nebraska. The Cards first game will be played on Thursday, May 19th at 5:30. It will be broadcast on ESPN2. The ladies will face Nebraska in their opening game of the double elimination regional. Quarter 1: What’s been up?
The 25th ranked Louisville Softball team pounded Western Kentucky 12-0 yesterday for their 11th straight victory bringing their overall record to 23-6. The Cards had 2 Grand Slams, by freshman, to account for 8 of their 12 runs. The first grand slam was in the second inning by 5’2″ freshman Lillie Goetz. She also had a grand slam in the Cards last game, a 19-3 victory over N.C. State. In the third inning, Freshman Megan Hensley hit a her 8th home run of the season and first career grand slam, to push the Cards to a 12-0 lead.
One staple of my podcast, Live With 55, is a segment I call This Week In Cardinal Athletics or TWICA for short. Since LW55 will not air this week due to the Men’s Basketball game at Pitt, I felt compelled to let you know what we have in store for you this week.
